I have no experience with that, but I do know that IG Inspectors would check to see if the buffer tube was clean.

You never noticed scarlet and gold palm trees and pretty piles of white painted rocks out in front of cp's? Maybe it's just a 1st MarDiv thing being California and all lol.

I had the same problem on my AR pistol build, The buffer tube extended too far in and the upper caught on it. No castle nut on this build so, what to do? I couldn't figure it out until finally I pulled a buffer tube off a rifle and found that the threaded portion of both were exactly the same length. Hmmm....maybe it's not the buffer tube. Maybe it's the end plate.  BINGO! The end plate for my pistol build was significantly thinner than the one on my rifle. I replaced the end plate with a better one and everything mated up perfectly.

Not at 29 Palms. They had a hard enough time keeping the 29 palm trees alive that lined the main road of the base.

Never removed a buffer tube on M-16's to clean. Can not see the need to on a AR build.

Ah well what ever makes one happy!

In the Army we removed the buffer spring every time we cleaned an M-16.  I still clean an AR the way I learned in the Army.  If I shot I cleaned it- Round count didn't matter.

Removing the buffer tube was beyond the 10 level maintenance in the Army, buffer spring and buffer yes, tube NO.  I did, once, that little freaking spring shot out of there and I couldn't find it.  Had to get a new one from the armorer...yea, cost me a 6-pack.

I think he meant the buffer and spring. :)

Meant to type spring not buffer tube.  I was operating ham radio while on site.

Other than what you military types were taught for busy work, is there really ever a need to remove the receiver extension?  😀

Only to replace a commercial tube with a milspec one. 😃

It's impossible to even touch the buffer without loosing springs (haha) I always have an oops kit around knowing what is gonna happen.
