Transferring a Single Bolt Action form NYC

I'm new to the Nashville area & we'll be staying here for a while. My mother has her father's Mauser from the war that she's going to have to give up in the near future, they'll be at her door on September 1st when the license expires. Looking around I know there's a set of steps we both need to complete to ship the rifle down here. Is it possible in the next month to get all the paperwork & legalities to acquire the rifle. It would be coming from the Bronx. I'm assuming I need a license & proper paperwork to do the transfer. I know google is my friend & I read a few topics here but in the interest of time, I'd like to have my grandfather's rifle in my possession without doing a crash course in this topic, 3 days already. Thanks in advance.

I don’t know what NY will require, but there is no registration in Tennessee. All you will need to do is have it shipped from an FFL there to an FFL here. You may find a FFL here that will accept shipment from a private person but I wouldn't count on it.

Of course I have absolutely no idea what NY requires her to do if they have that gun registered there.

In normal gun owning states a transfer between relatives is perfectly legal w/o going through an FFL but since she lives in the socialist cesspool state of ny that probably isn't possible.

We left 2 years ago, my brother left for college & never returned 2 decades ago... And all her sisters are gone. I can't wait until she leaves, I'm just happy with the neighbors that have moved where she lives & the few friends I have left there that keep an eye out. We're going to renew her license until I can go pick it up & drive back. Thanks for the advice.

Since she lives in another state, it's not possible to transfer without an FFL. Could be going from GA to TN, would still require an FFL.

@newtotn, pick the local FFL which you'd like to work with on your end and give them a call. Ask what they need from your mom to accept the rifle, and from you to transfer the rifle. Might just be a photocopy of her ID included with the rifle, and your smiling face and ID for the transfer.

Keep in mind that it might actually be cheaper for her to have a local FFL on her end handle the shipping. It would be worth her calling a couple to see if that's the case.

If you are going up there, go to an FFL there and do the transfer.  They should know what to do and as it is a long gun you should be able to drive home with it and not have to to anything here.

Before you do that, be sure that an FFL in NY is not prohibited from transferring to non-residents by state law. (Federal law allows it, but NY may still prohibit it...)

I have a good friend living in the Adirondacks. He's sent me 3 rifle's over the years & it was literally as simple as him taking each rifle to his local gun store & them shipping it to my local ffl.

It was no more difficult for either of us than that.

The Adirondacks and New York City are like two different countries, not even remotely related.  For instance, New York State handgun licensees are banned from carrying in NYC, though the license is fine for the rest of the State.   All firearms have to be registered in NYC, and you must have a license to even keep long guns in your home, and the home premises licenses are very difficult to obtain.

I'm originally from the Adirondacks. and my wife was a NYC resident.  If I made the 6 hour trip to NYC, I had to completely disarm, even pocket knife sizes are regulated.  Needless to say, it was rare indeed when I visited the Big Apple.  Folks in Tennessee don't realize how fortunate they are, and I love the 2nd Amendment freedom that we have here in Tennessee.

Dang, I live in Virginia right now but plan on moving (back) to Tennessee as soon as we find a place that works for us. In advance, I swear I'll not bring any of Virginia's new progressive BS with me when I come.

Fyi.....

I moved here from England. Believe me brother, I feel your pain.....

However, shipping a rifle TO TN from NY, even from NYC is as simple as I posted.

From what I can tell, rifles (bolt action) aren’t registered in NY State; they do require a permit in NYC. There is a “disposition form” she will have to fill out, although I couldn’t find it. To transfer that rifle she has to use a New York FFL.

If your Mother gave you that rifle when you were living in NY, it appears to me you could bring that rifle to Tennessee, without an FFL transfer, and  without violating any Federal, NY State or Tennessee laws. However, the unknown here is the NYC laws. Since I can’t find the “disposition form” its hard to tell how she is legally required to transfer it. If she is required to use a NY FFL (I would guess that is the case), They will need to transfer it to a TN FFL.

You might do better asking this question on a NYC gun forum. 🙃

We implore you to refrain from voting like you live in Nee York.

No problem there.  All of upstate NY is conservative, except for Albany and Rochester.  The problem is specifically NYC.  In the last election for Governor, I believe almost every Upstate county went for the Republican candidate, but it didn't matter since NYC always decides the vote.  I'm afraid the same thing will eventually happen in Tennessee due to Nashville and Memphis, I can already see it beginning to happen.

Things are changing around here also, hear more and more folks talking with a northern accent. Like to hear that slow southern drawl myself. Was talking to a waiter in one of the local restruants from NYC a while back and he said the first thing he done after moving here was purchase an AR-15.
