Hiking down to the river and back up in one day is not for the faint if heart, especially if there’s any heat.  When I was there, there were signs everywhere warning against trying it.  I would do it if I were alone or with a fit hiking partner.
The Virgin River in Zion was neat, but Angels Landing blew it away IMO.  Coolest 2.5 hour day hike in America.  And I agree—the tunnel exit from the east is something to see.

Yeah it was like the start of June so not cool by any means.  That was why I was starting so early. Was going to go down South Kaibab. Hoped to be at Phantom Ranch by 745-800 or so and then head up around 1 and stop to rest at the water points on Bright Angel.  I had been practicing in the heat here.

I've hiked rim-to-rim twice.  The first time was down the North Kaibab in mid-June.  It was 37F at the top when we started and around 120F when we got to Phantom Ranch (the next day).  I didn't know whether to wear long johns or a tank top.
