Opened the gun safe, my smith & Wesson 38 fell out and the grips shattered. Got no idea what it is.

 

has a “j” on the frame above the serial number. Is that what it is, a “j” frame? Square butt not round butt

Unless it’s really old, it should have a model number stamped on the frame inside the crane when you open the cylinder.

Does it have a J in front of the serial number on the butt?  That is the only number that matters.  

What kind of grips?  Wood usually does not shatter.

That’s an old model 10. It’s a K frame. Any K frame square butts will fit it. If you’re intent on bouncing it on the floor, you might look at a set of pachmayrs.

The old diamond magnas have become somewhat expensive, but ebay will offer you a plethora of options and price ranges. They are very common and easy to find.

Those are fine revolvers by the way, but I’m sure you already knew that.

What kind of grips did you break. If they were original, you might be able to glue them back together, or at least sell them to someone who’d like to rob the emblems, screw and escutcheons from them.

Yep, standard S&W K-frame square butt. Unlimited choices for replacements. 

I am curious. What grips were on it? I'm surprised they broke like that. Plastic?

They were cheap ivory lookalikes.

No doubt it’s a K-frame M&P but what explains the S serial number?

Post war pre model 10 , 45-48. His looks like 47-48 per the SN.

Yep. In 1945 the dropped the VS prefix when they swapped back to commercial models from making the Victory military models. At that time, they kept the S prefix until 1948.

I didn’t write this from memory. It is in Roy Jinks’ wonderful book.
