Expensive tail

Recommended Posts

Bet that got some attention icon-smile-1.gif

Many years ago ( pre internet ) I ran across a recipe for a Jamaican version of ox tail soup and at the time couldn't find any tail. I was on base today shopping at the commissary and they had some so I decided to finally try the soup recipe.....WRONG !!!!  $7.50 per pound for cut up pieces of a cow's tail !!! and I would need 2 1/2 - 3 pounds to make the soup. I don't care how good it's supposed to be, there's no way I'm going to spend that much money for any soup. dropjaw.gif

Ox tail is not cheap but man do I love it. Whenever I go by Kool Runnings in Smyrna I always get the ox tail.

A lot of previously disregarded parts of some animals are now quite expensive. You can thank young hipster chefs for that one,at least here in the south. Just like the soon to be sprouting ramps.

If the hipster would learn how to serve a proper plate of grub that actually fills one up, they wouldn’t need to ruin it for all the country folks that like to eat animal parts.

Try the International Market in Cordova by the movie theater.  You could almost reassemble a cow from all the parts they have there and prices are generally pretty decent.  Or try Fayette Packing.

Funny story....

In my past life as a Prepress wizard extrordinaire, I was working at an MBE print shop downtown. Only 2 white guys in the whole place (the estimator and me)..., that was the shop where I came across the photo I'm currently using as my avatar!

So a bunch of the guys would get lunch from some bodega down the street every Friday. Real home cooked soul food, 10 bucks, got a big styrofoam clamshell filled with whatever they made that week. Driver walked around at 11:30 taking orders from everyone in the plant, I'd stop for a sniff, sometimes it was interesting, smelled good, sometimes.

One day Kameron our driver asks "wanna try some?"

Me: Smells good. What is it?

Kameron: Ox Tails, white beans and rice with greens.

Me:......

Kameron: (holds up forkful)

Me: Nah man, white folks don't eat that part of the cow.

They were all rolling on the floor laughing.

Ya know its funny, out of all the jobs I've had and places I've worked, I experienced the least amount of racial tension while there. We'd cut up all kinds of jokes and stereotypes about each other, nobody got offended. Good times!

A friend said when he was a little kid, he was at his Grandparents house around supper time. He noticed a big pot on the stove with a lid. he took off the lid and it was Pintos with a hog tail in it. He said I wasn't that hungry.

You must not be eating at the right hipster places. 🙂 Have you been to Abridged? It's not too far from where you live. Best burger in town. I think there is a difference between hipster and high end. You may not get full at some of the real expensive places.

I just hope the hipsters don't learn about lengua and do to it what they have done to pork belly. If I have to pay a premium for my tacos de lengua I am going to be one unhappy white boy.

Yep , I remember when beef skirt steak was cheap meat and I'd stir fry it up like fajitas or cut it up and put in chilli. Now it costs as much as sirloin or other high priced beef steak cuts.
