The 2006 Preliminary Uniform Crime Report came out recently. Once again Memphis came in as the 4th most violent city in America. There was one violent crime for every 50 residents of Memphis. That means 1 murder, shooting, stabbing, beating, robbery or rape for every 50 citizens. There is at least a 2% chance that this will happen every year. I say at least because this only includes crimes reported to police. Many crimes are not reported.

Memphis (4) --- Population(680828) / Violent Crimes(13536) = 50.3

Nashville (13) --- Population(560813) / Violent Crimes(8561) = 65.5

Chattanooga (29) --- Population(156730) / Violent Crimes(1926) = 81.4

Knoxville(49) --- Population(182421) / Violent Crimes(1890) = 96.5

Clarksville(71) --- Population(114314) / Violent Crimes(1021) = 112

Violent Crimes are murders rapes aggravated assaults and robberies.

wow. I don't think I even want to VISIT Memphis

Towerclimber, don't worry. The statistics are based on resident population not visitors. Just don't plan on staying after dark cause its hard for the miscreants to tell who's a resident and who's just visiting.

About 12 years ago me and my wife decided on the spur of moment (yeah no kids back then, you can do things like that) to stop in Memphis on the way back from Texas, grab a room and see the Zoo the next day.

Got off the interstate at about 11:30... looking for a motel. Everything looked fine... then three blocks later, it Stopped looking fine!

We had passed a Firehall so I found a place to turn around and went back there to ask for directions. Needless to say the first thing they said was I didn't need to be around there this late at night, especially the direction I just came from! They steered us to a motel just a few blocks away and that neighborhood "looked" fine. Well lit, clean, no cars on blocks or in yards, etc.

In Nashville I have only had one "serious potential problem", and one "intrusion" into my truck. (One early morning, the other midday.) Learned

a little from both of those encounters. One thing is that about 10 minutes after it's over my heart starts beating like a rabbit! LOL!!!
