protection of the face from chapping (cream, ointment, fat, and at least some)

Recommended Posts

Facemasks and those Balaclava things are pretty good (they make some neoprene masks that are not so 'burglar' looking, try searching for snow-mobile wear.)

Honestly a deep hood, that provides some side protection to the winds works wonders.

I used to grow a beard, but all the grey made me feel too old!

Take a lesson from your wife - a little moisturizer goes a long way. It doesn’t need to be expensive - a $7 one from the grocery store goes a long way.

Personally - at the encouragement of my dermatologist - I use one with sunscreen in the morning and one without at night (which does wonders if you’ve been out in the field all day.)

I like a Neutrogena one with SPF every morning. I like a Burt’s bees one the rest of the time - unless I’ve really been out in the weather - then I go for my wife’s thick Pond’s one.

Vasoline is a petroleum-based product. Not what *I* want on my face. YMMV.

I use Neutrogena, formerly advertised by the late Paul Harvey. As he claimed, it was formulated for Norwegian fishermen for that cold North Atlantic wind. I use it due to riding my motorcycle in the winter. Wal-Mart carries it, so it's easily found.

As already mentioned, prevention is huge help. Wearing a face covering while outside will make things a lot better. Another thing people may not think about it the heat going all winter on the inside, it'll dry out the air, which dries out one's skin moisture.
