A couple friends and acquaintances in the past have complained about .40 snappiness, only to change their minds after switching from 135 and 155 grain ammo to 180 and 200.

Yeah, 180 grain is all I shoot in my 40's,    It makes a noticeable difference to me.   YMMV.

If I had known that everything was gonna go crazy, like it has, I would've never got into 9mm. I got into it because it was cheap and plentiful. Seems like some kind of dream now. I would've jumped on the .40 bandwagon with both feet.

I checked out GT's G22 that had been traded in. Some of those second hand guns would pass for new. Snappy? give me a break. You want a light powerful handgun that does not recoil?  I admitted you gotta practice. That's kinda universal. I miss my G29 2.5. I'll get another. I got a OEM 357 SIG barrel for my G23.4. The more the better.

I like .40 pretty well and have shot a boatload of it through 2011s and polymer guns.   However, I find the Glock 23 and 22 are quite uncomfortable to shoot, especially with factory ammo.   The greater recoil seems to magnify all the ergonomic problems that I have with the Glock frame.

Service pistols like the M&P for example are just about as easy to find in the $350 range and are far more comfortable to shoot for me.

M&P surplus is a solid option too following the same philosophy and looks like it comes in a little cheaper today. Good call.

My preference is the Glock because of aftermarket support. With the hotter rounds, I found the dual recoil spring assembly in the Gen 4 makes a difference, your mileage may vary. I noticed it more with the G20 than the G22.

Just bought this homely looking 40 last week and like the way it handles. So, I'm doing a stainless rebuild of the gun as I write this.  Taurus PT940 PT-940 Comes with one magazine - Semi Auto Pistols at GunBroker.com : 927526269   I use a Kahr K40 as a in population carry when conditions are right and the problem with them in this cal is the left side of the web frame cut would stab the base thumb bone joint. The fix on my stainless gun was to just cut it away and resurface it. My son complained of the same hit in the web so a solution was needed. It looks suttle but made a big difference. I'm getting into loading Lehigh coppers soon. Should make the 40 a sizzler with a bit less recoil. I only buy 165's now.

I was looking for a .40 when I ran across the first 9mm I ever bought. at the time, 40 and 44 mag were the only thing on the shelf. And there was a LOT of 40 cal on the shelf. I'll probably get a 10mm instead. cost is higher but most will run 40 ammo. Same logic as choosing a 357 mag over a 38 special for me. I have nothing against 40 S&W but sorry guys, glock makes 'homely pistols. That said, if I needed a budget handgun, the OP has a good point. I wouldn't have a problem with one of these turn ins.

I really started to get interested in Handguns as a hobby when the G22's started becoming available as Police Trade ins.   I bought one very reasonably, and have owned ever since.  If circumstances ever dictate a situation where I will be down to one weapon, that G22 would almost certainly be on the short list, due to its bang for the buck factor, reliability, and capability.
