Laws about shooting on private land

Recommended Posts

I’m in the process of looking for land to both build upon and to have my own place to shoot. I currently live in Rutherford County just barely outside of Murfreesboro city limits, but this area is far too expensive to buy a decent sized piece of land.

So what if any laws does TN have about shooting on private land?  How much land do I need to own, or is there a limit?  What about proximity to roads or other houses?  I shoot suppressed often, but unsuppressed at times as well, and as anyone k owns that’s shot an AR15 with a suppressor, they’re still loud.

You need to be outside city limits and shoot in a safe direction, backstop, etc.

As a good neighbor, you should be as respectful as possible to your neighbors. Several of my neighbors often show up to shoot with me.

Otherwise, I’m on my own property, and I am holding a loaded gun. I’ll shoot if I want to.

Talk to the future neighbors before you buy. It would be a shame to spend a bunch of money only to have the neighbors call the Sheriff every time you light off a few rounds. Also check County zoning ordinances.

I would shoot every day if that happened to me. Without a suppressor of course. I have told my neighbors if they had a day they don't want to listen to gun fire, just call and let me know. I'm usually suppressed, but a few LEOs will stop by and zero guns sometimes. The do always call first.

We shoot loud guns maybe 10 times a year, so not excessive. Suppressed is about twice a month.

Thanks for the information. I’m looking around Dekalb County at the moment, but I’m not tied to any particular county or area yet. I shoot a mix of suppressed and unsuppressed, but an AR15 or anything like that is loud suppressed or not, and muzzleloaders I don’t suppress at all. Rough guess I’d say that I shoot about 75% or more days suppressed, and if I had the land I’d probably shoot 3-5 times a week.
