Greenwood Mall - "Gun Free Zone" signs do not have the effect of law

Recommended Posts

So the 22-year old "hero" (per the Greenwood police chief) who skillfully took out the mall shooter before his fatality count could get above 3 was not violating Indiana law when he carried into the mall, only mall policy. Signs prohibiting concealed carry in a business (or creating, as I like to call them, "Criminal Protection Zones") do not have the effect of law in Indiana. The worst that can happen is, the mall can ban him from the property. Ouch.

In light of that, does anyone think there's any chance of similar legislation in TN at some point ?

Wish they would take the force of law away from signs here in TN. I think it is possible to get the law changed, but you'll hear certain people scream bloody murder about it.

The media isn't wanting to talk too much about this incident, the outcome doesn't fit their narrative. When they go to yelling gun control because of the active shooter, they contradict themselves if they acknowledge the outcome.

I saw an article where the mall ownership actually praised Mr. Dicken's heroism. However, they stopped short of making any direct comments on their No Guns signs.

The owner is Simon Property Group. They are notorious anti-gunners. They ban firearms in every mall they buy, which is a lot.

Tennessee is one of the few states that has a class B weapons misdemeanor for certain 'no guns' signs and even fewer states that makes it a misdemeanor weapons crime for people with a permit or enhanced permit to carry past some 'no gun' signs.

Most states treat 'no guns' signs as a trespass issue, especially for people with licenses or permits, and not weapons crimes.

Seems to me that would be a dandy legislative effort for the next session !

Following update from Dave Spaulding/Handgun Combatives......Mr. Dickens fired his 1st shot at a distance of 43 yds from a kneeling position from cover and the active shooter was hit and also hit by 2nd shot.  Dropped immediately. Never expected to meet resistance.  Did not point or fire towards Dickens.  Follow-up shots continued because of continued movement.  Federal headstamps on pistol rounds.

Great work. Shades of Sr Airman Andy Brown and the Fairchild AFB Shooting

Yes!  I was just talking to an Air Force buddy of mine about that shooting at Fairchild.  Amazing shots.  I always shot expert with my USAF Beretta, but I doubt I coulda done that.
