Small furry animal running around?

Recommended Posts

The past few times I've pulled into my driveway, I've noticed a small furry animal scurrying off into the bushes near a small stream. It looks an awful lot like a beaver, as it's sort of chubby looking and small, but it doesn't have a flat tail. It's more like a puff of fur on it's butt, like a rabbit. Anyone have any ideas as to what it is and whether it's a pest of some sort?

It definitely isn't a rabbit, nor a squirrel.

I live near Radnor Lake, if that helps.

Groundhog?

Perhaps. I haven't seen any burrows around here, and this little guy will run around rather than go underground. When I pulled up a few minutes ago, he ran to my house and then ran back to the stream after I started walking to my front door.

I just looked outside and he's hanging around on my driveway, just sitting in the shade of a tree.

I need to get a picture...

i would say either a ground hog, or muskrat. Most beavers will run to water and hide. I have seen otters around the area before!

If they're not actively eating, ground hogs will generally stand up on rear legs and take a look around at things if they stay in one place very long. Heck, you'll see them like that on the side of the interstate some times, like they're just watching the traffic go by to loll away the afternoon.

Has he whistled?

Reason they're called whistle pigs.
