Help me Accessorize my digital camera.

Recommended Posts

So I decided to take up a new hobby. Just bought a Canon XSi with the 18-55 lens.

Need a little help on the cards now. I haven't found any real helpful info yet on the net. I am only taking pictures. I don't ever see myself taking video. I do know I do not want to spend a fortune on the cards at the moment as I am saving for more lens'.

Anyway, any suggestions on what to look for (brand, class, speed, etc.) or what to stay away from.

Thanks for the help.

My favorite Canon Lens: the 50mm f1.8 I picked up one of these for $40 on Craigslist and you can regularly find them for ~$60. This is the lens that is most commonly hanging on my Canon XT.

Also, If you aren't concerned with perfect optics and extremely low distortion, I'd recommend picking up one of those cheap screw on wide angle kits. I bought one for $15 used at a yard sale and I've had all kinds of fun with it. It goes everywhere that my 18-55mm goes (btw, if you get/have one, don't use the AF as it can hurt the motor spinning that much glass around)

As for cards, I only have a 2gb and a 512mb as a backup. Depending on what I'm shooting, I generally do not shoot RAW. If I'm shooting pictures at a family reunion, as an example, a large Jpeg will be just fine. If I'm out with the tripod with the intent to take some great pictures I'll shoot raw. Because I'm picky and delete 1/2 of what I shoot in the field when I'm being serious about photography I can get away with a 2gb card. My point, don't go spend $50 on a CF card unless you plan on taking really long trips.
