Problems with site freezing up

Recommended Posts

I'm not sure if its on my end or the site but I'm having problems with the site locking up after I've been on it a few minutes. I don't see any certain pattern to it. It just locks up and won't let me open anything. It's like its timing out or something. I can come back later and it works fine for a few minutes and then does it again.

Is anybody else having these same problems?

It appears to be you. I've been on most of the night, going back in forth between work stuff, and mulitple websites, haven't had any problem on my end, and I'm using comcast.

I've noticed a few slow periods lately but nothing with it "locking up" so to speak. Keep in mind that once the server generates a page and delivers it to your browser, aside from some AJAX scripts that generate active content, the server is pretty much done with your session until you click something else.

If it appears that the site has frozen up on you, chances are it's your browser.

Well, I of course get 15 sec to 1 min delays before a new page is coughed up or refreshed from time to time, depending on shared server capacity/usage. I guess one could call this "freezing/locking up".

Obviously, if you can surf normally on other sites at same time (tabs, ya know), it's not your browser; OP didn't mention if that's the case.

All other sites work fine. It's just this one that just seems like it stops working. After a few minutes of browsing the site it won't open anything else. Anything else on other sites I have open still works fine.

Same here ... and if you click on it again, it responds that you must wait at least 10 seconds before a new search.

There is always a ten second interval set for searches and PMs.

Even if it hasn't given you the page you requested, it's obviously receiving your request click.

May I be so bold as to not speak for David, but just to explain again what he has said numerous times:

TGO often runs at the limits of its shared server resources.

"Shared" means that X number of other "domains" (web sites) run off the same "server" (computer) at the "webhost" (the company that runs the servers with gateways to the internet).

At any given time, total usage of all sites on a particular server will limit speed/access to x number of users of any given, or all, sites on that server. Not only that, but the total bandwidth (maximum amount of data through the provider's gateway) is shared among all the servers run by the hosting company.

Solution of course is relatively simple -- "merely" throw money at the problem to upgrade web hosting. David has explained the dilemma numerous times, which basically comes down to money in vs. money out as TGO grows, a delicate balancing act. It's way beyond "hobby level" anymore.

Not to mention his own time, so I won't. :)

To the OP, try updating your browser - or using a different one.

While delays due to shared server usage have been mentioned above, this forum is using the same software that is used by hundreds of other forums. If it was breaking browsers and hanging computers, it would be doing it to a lot of them.

Plain answer is very simple. It's your computer or something on it.

I don't think they have enough bandwidth, or so I'm told, because this is the only site that does this to me, too. Sometimes it will totally freeze up my puter. End this task and everything works fine.

Is AGO (American Gun Owners) using the same software? "Cause their site does it, too. It's not the computers. You're overloaded.

It is not my computer, this is the only site that does it.

Out of five forums that I frequent, this is the only one freezing.

I know it is not the software cause four of the five I am on uses vBulletin.

They have the most solid forum software out there right now.

It has got to be the server that is hosting the site.

I sure as hell wish I knew someone who did enterprise servers for a living.

Oh, wait...
