Problems with site freezing up

Seriously... I just get tired of hearing the same stuff time after time. Yeah, the site gets slow from time to time. I'm extremely picky about server performance but so far the server is holding up reasonably well under the incredible load we put on it. I could tweak it for balls-out performance but as soon as I did, we'd get thrown off of the server by the hosting company for being disrespectful of the other folks who share the physical server that we're on.

The ultimate answer is a dedicated server. That answer comes with a pretty hefty pricetag. It's where we are headed, inevitably, but we're not quite there yet.

Moving to one doesn't just involve money. It also involves time, and that's something I have even less of these days. As soon as I have both of those commodities in enough supply, changes will happen. Until then, have some patience.

And for what it's worth, I have spent the past 15 years of my professional life operating as a top-tier systems engineer very profitable companies supporting extremely critical systems. I didn't fall off of the cabbage truck yesterday and I know my **** when it comes to servers.

TGO isn't mission critical and it doesn't operate with a multi-billion dollar budget, so I do the best I can with the resources we have at our disposal. Anyone who wants to write a couple-thousand dollar check to pay for better hosting and and a year's worth of bandwidth, feel free to contact me. I'll put your money to good use.

All of this reminds me of a slogan that we used to have on our server room wall back when I was a senior systems engineer at a major bank holding company...

SPEED = CACHE = MONEY

Of course, back then memory was significantly more expensive than it is nowadays.

And then there are threads like this one that really make me want to devote more time and resources making the site faster for people who want to take advantage of everyone else's contributions.

As you well know, Super Dave, there's a computer geek in my house that deals with this...and it ain't me. Would this fix the problem?

If so...let's start the campaign.

I'll send 20 now if you tell me where. Who needs a motorcycle with this crappy weather anyhow.

20 more if someone will hurry up and take that pistol in the classifieds.

You could help fund the site with your purchase?

(yeah I'm a shameless promoter, sorry)

Just for the record... this isn't a push for more money or anything like that. Even if we suddenly had $3,000 dumped into the community (about what a decent dedicated server would cost for a year) there's still the nagging little detail of me just not having any time to do the overhaul. Not for a few weeks at least.

Was that an earthquake or did you drop your mouse David?

Exactly what I thought...

I consider it a 'sip' of the Wrath of David that could befall us if we keep bi+chin'.:hyper:

Site should be nice and fast right now. I made changes that will either get us kicked off of the server or prove to be the last level that I can bump it up to before we have to go to a dedicated host. If you try to hit TGO and can't in a few days... it was the former and not the latter.

Cross your fingers.

I'm still having the same problems. Really frustrating. I've cleared all my history including cookies thinking that might be the problem but it didn't help. I really don't think its on my end. I may download firefox and see if it works with it. I'm running the latest version of internet explorer so I don't see what could be wrong. Can anybody help?
