Police Scanner questions

Recommended Posts

I have heard that one is OK to listen to a police scanner but you are not suppose to repeat anything you hear over them, is that true?

I feel anything broadcast over those channels is available to the public if not encrypted and you are using non modified equipment and therefore anything I hear I should be able to talk about.

Opinions? Facts?

In short, I heard something last night and I would like to get more details about the event that lead upto it and have found nothing on the news yet.

I never heard that before. The one thing I do believe to be true is that you cannot have one in your car.

First I want to make sure I can't get in trouble for repeating it. I know my parents when they got a scanner years ago aways told me you are not suppose to repeat things you hear on them. I know that was 20 years ago, as they got it when I was first learning to drive and he still has that same scanner.

I got one about 2 years ago, I barely got the thing working but every now and then I pick up some interesting stuff.

Personally I believe anything I repeat would just be hear say anything and technically should be protected under freedom of speech.

You ask so many questions, we're getting awfully suspicious of you now....

You got the police scanner for what reason? Check to be sure you're not hiding something that if you hear your address on the scanner, you'd take off? :D hahaha

I looked up the law on scanners once about 13-14 years ago and (then) the law basically said you are free to listen to a scanner all you want where ever you want as long as you are not using it to aid in the commission of a crime.

That's not the case in Tennessee.

That's it, in a nutshell.

I used to have a weblink to be able to listen in to scanners all over the country, must have lost it in the last crash.

if they can play police calls over the interwbz I am sure what is said can be talked about.

Well last night I heard a Life Star flight, they had what I believe to be the victim of a home invasion. They described the injuries and everything. I want to find out news story behind the event. I haven't seen anything online yet. Wondering if they got people that did the invasion and stuff.

I believe the flight was from Campbell Co, guessing to UT.

For those of you with an iPhone ... get the free 5.0 radio to listen to scanner feeds from across the country.

Just don't listen to the MPD/SCSD on Friday or Saturday night if you live within 100 miles of Memphis!

Why?

Because it will scare the crap out of you.

Half joking, of course, but it's all kind of frightening the amount of stuff you hear on weekend nights when listening to MPD/SCSD on the scanner...

There is no law or regulation saying you can't talk about or repeat what you have heard from a scanner. I guess it is some for of entertainment for people. Me personally I hear a radio all day once I check out of service I turn the darn thing off and doesn't come back on till it's time to start work again.

Amen. I know there are a few guys that listen when they're off-duty. WTF? I don't listen to the damn thing half the time when I'm at work and supposed to be paying attention. Let alone when I'm off! :D

From what I heard it sounded like the home owner was fighting back against a knife.

They described the cuts he had and everything in enough detail that I could image what it must be.

I want to know if they got the SOB that caused it
