New State Training Video for HCP Class

Well, they've gone and done it. I received a new video from the state today to show in our handgun carry permit classes.I thought, "How wonderful. No more having to correct all the mistakes located in the last video from the shot of Jimmy Hester thumb-cocking a 1911 with his finger in the trigger guard, to explaining that the most popular handgun certainly was the 357 magnum revolver... 30 YEARS AGO, to that little 357 magnum Glock thing and of course all those out-dated law references." No more having to apologize to the class in advance. So, I eagerly view the new video and learn that all that other BS has been replaced by NEW BS. Now we are going to learn about how many alcoholic drinks per hour the average liver can metabolize. Never mind that we don't have to know this as when carrying our firearm with a permit we can have NO booze in the blood. Then there's the inordinate amount of time tied up in discussing the use of your handgun to stop a threat on your own property.

Well, it beats the last video but is typical of a state produced video.

OK wise guy, it's a DVD. The DOS refers to it as a video in their correspondence. It's not the format that is so disappointing but rather the content. Considering the apparent mentality of the state it might as well be a video... in BetaMax format

When mine came Friday, I was as excited as a kid at Christmas.........and then, like you, was disappointed. It's half the length of the old "video" (which was VHS) but just not well produced IMO. The liver oxidization stuff was a snoozefest, and the whole thing seemed a little random and not organized very well. It's better than what we had, but not by much.

I was just kidding, but also wondering, because I didn't know if the state was smart enough not to use DVD..

This may be asking a lot but is there anyway for a holder of such a spectacular cinematic prodcution to make copies and share?

I have no idea of what stipulations being in possession of the thing are but people still have to take the class to get a permit. So there should be no reason to let it out...for educational purposes. Shouldn't we HCP holders be kept up to date? :)

Did they at least keep the segment where the lady got pulled over and the police officer lost his mind when he saw her carry piece as she leaned over to get her registration?

  • 3 weeks later...

lol... just saw this thread. We got ours the 1st week they released it. The first class I showed it too had two local Judges in it. They both ripped it to shreads. It wasnt done very well, they spent more time on the BAC then the law, it reminded me of some of those old DARE videos we had to watch back in hte day.

ONE THING NO ONE HAS MENTIONED YET.... ITS ALMOST HALF THE TIME OF THE OLD ONE!!!!

So this means we have to lecture for another 30 minutes every class!!!!

LOL

Maybe they KNOW the video sucks, and are relying on you guys to give more of the real scoop.

Somebody needs to spend some time on it. I would guess it ranks up there with “Do I have to use an FFL to ship my handgun to a buyer across state lines?†as one of the most misunderstood topics.

I’m guessing there might be some HCP instructors that don’t understand it.

And just how are lawyers not professionals?
I think he may have meant professional video guys. The lawyers in the old tape were ok in terms of content, but they kinda sucked on tape.

That's exactly what I meant. Thank you.

Perhaps we are thinking about this backassward.

Most of us know that there is very little that the government can truly do well and almost never as well as the private sector. So...perhaps the answer is for some enterprising guys/gals (perhaps HCP instructors) and interested parties (gun shops, gun ranges, etc) to get together and do their own, first-rate and legally ACCURATE video. Given the talent for video production in this state it ought to be possible to do a very professional production.

Then; take the finished product to whatever bureaucrat in TN state government has the power to approve such things and ask him/her to approve it for use in HCP classes.

If nothing else, perhaps the video could at least be used to give people taking the training some accurate information.
