Yes. People forget, there was a push on firearm control after Reagan's assassination attempt. Arguably, the Brady bunch would never have existed, had Brady not been injured in the attempt on Reagan. In addition, the Brady Bill could be traced directly back to this event. Reagan, even though he did not like the idea of gun control in general, actually endorsed the Brady Bill... Why I'm for the Brady Bill - Op-Ed - NYTimes.com

So, history repeats itself. Then, it created the Brady Bill and background checks (which, it seems, may have failed in the Giffords event.)

So, then what should we expect from the current situation? I expect Three pieces of legislation: A limitation on "over-sized" magazines, stricter background checks, and an attempt to reinstall the AWB.

I think they will start there but it will be a tough road for them this time. We will have to see where this one goes.

Maskirovka!

The advantage they are taking is to obscure the sorry state of affairs that they have wrought in the last two years. What better issue to polarize and demonize the right, while keeping the eyes of the country off the real issues that are driving a surge against the Left.

If they can polarize the country with this issue, they do not have to deal with the inflation that is beginning to grip us, rapidly rising gas and food prices, a shrinking dollar etc. If they threaten take away gun rights, it could be that we are too focused on that to the extent that maybe we will not notice them trying to slip off with our 401K's....

Never let a crisis go to waste, and if there is not one, make one up!

Do not forget, all politicians take advantage of tragic events... No matter the party, or the promises...

So what you're saying is all is lost. Go stick our heads in the sand. It doesn't matter.

I feel better now.

No, but thanks for the attempt at putting words in mouth. What I said was all politicians take advantage of tragic events. It is why we have the so-called patriot act, the Brady law, gun free zones, and other knee jerk reactions which make us no safer, but moves power to certain groups. I did not say for you to abandon all hope and go jump off the nearest cliff...

Fortunately, the majority in the House is more conservative (claimed, anyway.) It is my hope some other event (not as tragic, please) occurs and takes the shine off this one, so the legislation dies before getting a chance to come up for a vote.

Well, it's obviously more conservative. They have done

mostly what was promised, considering they can't do

much to begin with, except block stuff and defund.

I'm sure since they are Republicans they will get the

accepted criticism from the media and will get a shorter

run at things before we fall back into "rule".

Reactionary politics is just wrong. If you want to wait

for something to happen to give you your justification

for a certain vote, there is very little reason to be there,

in the first place.

The constitution is good enough justification and doesn't

require additional events. Vote by emotions and get

crap legislation.

None of this crap can move forward without Republican support. So, I guess we're going to see what we really got from the last election. I think it's safe to say that Obama is pulling the strings in the recent ATF actions. It's probably a good thing that he's showing his cards. This is going to be interesting at least, and possibly painful if the Repubs let us down.
