What gun did you use to take your carry permit class?

Seriously.

Whole cylinder has to come out to reload it.

Instructor said, "you're not thinking about carrying that are ya?" I said "sure, look how quick it is to reload!"

But I had to go ahead and nudge him with a grin, 'cause he had this look of mild horror on his face.

i used a witness p.s. .40. put all of them within a 6" area. could have put them within a 60" area and still passed. the shooting part is more of a fun practice than a test.

Ruger Security Six, shooting 38 Spl. Required to shoot double action, and with stock hammer and trigger springs, struggled with it due to a benign tremor in my shooting hand. Shot 94% and have since replaced springs with reduced power versions, like butter now and not a single misfire.

I used a Smith & Wesson 686 shooting .38’s. We didn’t have any 100% in our class because the instructor quit counting holes at the minimum required to pass. He didn’t stop at my target, just walked by, laughed, and said “I can’t score your target; it’s just one big hole…. Pass.â€

I think the farthest we shot was 15 yards, with most being at 7. At 7 yards you shouldn’t have anything outside the 10 ring, but you can and still pass.

Man, the testosterone is thick in here. How did this go from your weapon of choice in qualifying for your HCP to bragging about how little of your target was left? Forgive me if I sound like a jerk, but who cares? I don't remember that being part of the OP's original question.

For the record, I placed 100% of my qualifying shots on the target, but that's more a testament to the accuracy of the Hi Power I used than to any supposed skill level I possessed, which at the time was virtually NONE, other than knowing which way to point it and how to pull the trigger.

Wonder if anyone could hit 100% in a real, live high-pressure SD situation? I know I couldn't, no matter how accurate I am standing still at 7 or 15 yards punching holes in paper. Yet that's one thing that a lot of instructors fail to mention, the adrenaline dump and the loss of fine motor skills when you actually have to defend your life or the life of someone you care about.

Remember the 11th commandment: Thou shalt not kid thyself.

I believe the shots (been a while since I held a class) 3,7 and 21 yards. 3 and 7 are easy. 21 opens up everyones groups. Just practice like you normally would. If the class isn't too large we give students a chance to practice prior to the "real" shooting.

DON'T overthink it. the XD will be fine. I've had students take it with HiPoints they bought at lunch from the pawn shop next door :-)

I used a Glock 9mm to qualify on the range. I had to qualify with a semi automatic pistol in Arkansas to have the choice of carrying a semi auto or revolver. If I qualified with a revolver I could only carry a revolver.

Bark in the dark days when I took my clas from the Great One, Buford Tune; I believe it wassimilar. We were then told we could only carry with what we qualified with. But seems that didn't last too long.

Use a .22.

The ammo is much cheaper than feeding 48 rounds through a .40. Unless of course the class includes free ammo (which ASP in Joelton did back when I took my class).
