Shooting West Nashville - gun sale involved

Recommended Posts

You guys seeing this on the news? Saying a guy was ambushed after advertising gun for sale on Craigslist.

yikes. I recently sold a gun(not on craigslist since they don't allow it). I met the guy at a very populated Wal-Mart and watched him like a hawk. Turns out he was harmless but I wasn't taking any chances. Next time I won't go alone.

I don't think that you can ever be too careful when making a sale or a purchase from a stranger.

Buying almost anything off CL is now a crap shoot if you come back un harmed or not! A few years ago in Vegas my buddy replied to a post to buy a Macbook, went to the gated community to meet him. Called the number on the box and no answer so he called the cell # back and they guy said he would buzz him in. Some one opened the gate and he pulled in. As he pulled in he was met face to face with another car in front and the gate close behind him and the 2 men in the facing car that blocked his got out and met him with weapons drawn! They new he would have over $1000 on him because he was "buying" a Macbook so they robbed him.

CL has it that Terms of use prohibits sales of any type of firearm. But its those out there that are selling them on there that are either selling something possibly stolen, or willing to sell to anyone! And I would bet that most looking to buy off CL are NOT allowed by law to own one! So if you happen to see one posted just flag it!

I try and meet in open parking lots as well. Meeting anyone from the net for the first time will put you on edge. Back in 2006, while on a Land Between the Lakes coyote hunt, I shared a cabin with some fellow coyote hunters I met online. You want to talk about sleeping with one eye open. I had a fear of waking up with my undies on backward.

I have done many deals with the folks here on TGO, I would never deal with anyone on Craigslist or any other forum besides here when it comes to firearms. I always pack and am ready when I do any transaction and expect that everyone on here does as well. You can never be too careful when dealing with strangers

I always liked to meet in the Bass Pro parking lot. They used to have a mobile cop camera there. I always carry, but I figure if the buyer/ seller is not legit they aren't going to be too fond of conducting business while possibly being recorded.

I know that this method is not for everyone ( privacy issues and all), but the buyer/seller always understood my logic and never had problems with it.

What I always laugh about is you have two paranoid armed guys conducting a transaction with their heads on a swivel attempting to be cordial, but being prepared to shoot if things get ugly. After That first meeting I always wonder if the other guy thinks that I was as squirrelly as I thought he was.

It makes me truly appreciate what David and his team of Moderators has done here with the Trading Post. I only deal with TGOers with positive feedback from other TGOers whose names I recognize as reputable members (Dolomite, Fallguy, OhShoot, etc.).

It actually was not CL....it was Armslist.

Kind of brings it closer to home now. I used AL before I knew about this site.

All the more reason NOT to anymore however.

Yet another reason to stick with TGO

I just found this

Just remember, folks, it theoretically could happen here as well. ALWAYS...

  1. Check feedback and see if the member has any dealings to his/her credit yet. Gauge and plan your actions accordingly.
  2. Meet in a very public place, in daylight if possible, at a police station parking lot if possible.
  3. Let someone know where you're going, who you are supposed to be meeting, and when you'll be back.
  4. Go armed and be ready for anything. Take backup with you if possible.

I actually gave an interview on this event to WSMV at the Nashville Armory this morning. A snippet of it aired at 5, and could possibly replay at 10. The reporter asked me why anyone would want to sell their gun online. I pointed out that, much like car sales, individuals can often get a better price selling to a third party as opposed to taking it into a dealer or reseller that must ultimately turn a profit on the transaction.

I echoed almost exactly the comments in this thread, including David's suggestion about meeting in a police station parking lot. Tragic event. I'm going to discuss with my co-owner and GM but I personally would love to put a process in place where members who felt uncomfortable consummating a sale in a parking lot can use us and/or our facility at no charge. It would also give potential buyers a chance to test the gun out on site.

I would never sell anything on CL personally. With forums it's a bit different like David said, there are means to validate claims of the person to an extent.

They should have these guys captured by Friday at the latest... It never ceases to amaze how dumb people are with technology, and what they think will keep them from getting caught.
