how to delete account

Recommended Posts

I'm leaving TN in December and won't be using TGO. I don't know if any information is kept about me on a server somewhere, so for privacy I think it's best to delete account details.

I also asked before searching and found that there is no deletion of accounts here. Instead I should just stop posting.

Just remove your info, e-mail if you left it, Bday if you left it, and anything else, just put in fake info.

Who ever wants info on you from here already has it, they would just look at your profile.

True. This is the only online community I belong to and there is some good stuff here. The thing about me leaving TN is that I doubt I will have the time or option to shoot again for a long while, but I could be taking a pessimistic view of the situation. I'm starting a new job that's requiring me to relocate (yet again) and I believe I will be very busy. Maybe too busy to shoot or get on TGO.

Edit to add: I'm also not taking any firearms with me when I move.

I have checked out several other <insert state name>gunowners sites as I travel to and from other states. Just about every other state has a site of a similar title to this one, but I find this one to be the most informative. Perhaps you should stay. The rare time you may have to get on here would still keep you connected to the shooting community, new products, and the state of Tennessee in general. It might become a good treatment for the occasional home sickness. Just sayin.

Then may I have them? I promise to take good care of them, keep them clean, and shoot them for you.

(1400th post? I need to get out of the house more often...)

So I guess I should offer up an explanation as to why I don't delete accounts. It's probably been posted somewhere else here in the past but, what the heck...

Basically it leaves "holes" in our forum when I do that. Posts suddenly become attributed to Guest or Guest_yourusername which kind of screws up the search-ability of posts and so forth. It's a decision somewhat made on the basis of aesthetics, functionality and practicality.

What you really need to know is that we don't keep any personal information about you other than what you provided when you signed up. Your email address is pretty much it. Beyond that we keep a small history of the IP addresses you visited from, and whatever you posted on the forum publicly. If you clear out your private messages, eventually those too go away as we age out our database backups.

So I'm not sure exactly what deleting a user account would do for a person's privacy, especially when you consider that any post you've made publicly has long since been indexed by Bing, Google, Yahoo and whatever alphabet-soup agencies care to index things like that. If you're worried about being off the grid, per se, that horse ran off the farm the first time you started using the Internet. :)

Anyway, so there it is. Hope it makes sense, but I also hope it doesn't make you panic.

I joined the Air Force and will be in training for at least 32 weeks starting December 11. Eight and a half weeks of BMT and 24 weeks of tech school back-to-back. No guns and no computer during that time, so no matter what I will not be posting or reading anything on TGO.

When I get credit card applications in the mail, I shred them. If I am not going to be using something that possibly has personal information tied to it, I delete it. It just seems like a good idea. No panic. Thanks for the information, David.

Thank you for your service. May you serve well, and safely. May you and your family be aided by the citizens of this nation you have chosen to serve. Bless you.
