Happens a lot. I used to be around tracks a lot. Yes, there is sometimes info given to criminals on which trains are carrying what. In Chicago they have active gangs that hit the trains. Armed, and around 30 people. Very dangerous. They come up to the train, and pull the brake. Then break open the containers, fill up a bunch of cars, trucks, and vans, and go. Done in minutes. The Railroad Police in that area carry full auto rifles and wear kevlar. When they roll up on a gang hitting the train, they report and wait for backup. 2 vs 30 is not good odds.

Heard of one story out of the Memphis area. Two guys hit a train, and break open a container. They get caught. They thought they were hitting a container full of computers, "since it had Chinese written all over it." They were mistaken. The container was full of prank fake dog poop. So, they got 10-20 years attempting to steal fake dog poo.

It was a piggyback container. I doubt an inside job. Those trains don't identify just about everything on their consists.
Some thug probably got lucky when they were looking for TV's and stereos. I imagine railroad security catches
Hell, though. Pigs usually don't stop, but for recrews.
