TN Bill to remove restrictions on knife possession and carry

Recommended Posts

Well there is the catch.  The bill didn't really get voted on.  Rep. Dennis introduced the amendment that killed the bill before the bill got voted on.  So the full finance committee voted to adopt the amendment and then voted to pass the bill "as amended."

I think it was all voice vote, anyway. Standard procedure so none of them have to answer for anything.

It might be productive to contact your local sheriff and ask them why they are supporting this nonsense. Sheriff's Association has a facebook page, also.

Ah, of course, the "now ya see me now ya don't sidestep dance". How foolish of me to think it was straightforward.

Unfortunately, Universal Pictures has blocked the famous Charles Durning rendition, so can't post it in ridicule.

Ok. Plans to leave this state remain in place. TN will be down one physician when training is over. AZ will get my taxes, and not too soon.

Who from this Sheriff's Assoc and what was their reason for talking our legislators into not fixing this problem?  Does the sheriff's assoc make the laws or the people?

Exactly.  This is garbage.  Rep. Dennis caved to pressure from sheriffs that have no idea what they are talking about.  Its garbage.  The head of the sheriff's association was there today and he compared the sound of a switchblade to the pump of a shotgun.  Fearmongering!

OK, folks, time to take a deep breath.  Whoever said that legislation is like making sausage was making an understatement. It is, at best, an ugly process. But, it is the process and we have to work within to make changes. That's what we do.  So, let me adress your obvious and perfectly understandable disappointment. We are pretty dman disappointed too.

First off, the suggestion that Rep. Dennis "caved" as if that was a bad thing is totally unwarranted.  The fact is, whether we like it or not, this bill wasn't going to get out of that comittee without the amendment.  Period, end of story. That's the way it works sometimes.

Second, the Knfie Law Preemption portion of the bill is as critical, in the big picture, as was the repeal of the ban on swithcblades and the length restriction.  Knife Law Preemption is a cornerstone of our strategy, without which, other changes don't count as much.  The NRA did this with guns and we are doing it with knives.  So, two important parts to this bill, one did survive and we should all be happy for that.  Glass half full vs glass half empty.  We still need to work hard to get this bill passed in the House or all the effort will have been for naught.  That woudl be a far bigger shame.

Third, change doesn't always come easy and it doesn't always come instantly.  In fact, it often is a real challenge. Sometimes it talkes years of going back to the legislature to get the job done.  Persistence pays off. I live in Arixzona and we have damn good gun and knife laws.  Soem have said they are the best in the nation.  In any case, they didn't get that way overnight,  It's taken almost two decades of incrimental changes to get where we are today.  As long as we are moving in the right direction, we are making progress.  We just passed our Knife Rights bill in Kansas.  That was a two-year effort. Last year it died completely.  We are close to getting the job done in Alaska and that's taken two years.  Similar stories elsewhere.

Yes, we're disappointed, very much so, but this only makes us more determined to succeed next year, And, as is always the case when these setbacks occur, we also now have a clearer pictire of the problem and what we need to work on. You can be damn sure the sherriffs are going to be hearing from us. We have already taken steps in that direction. If we can change their mind, then next year will be far easier.

So, right now, we need to get this job done as best we can, get the bill passed so Knife Law Preemption is in place in Tennessee. Move the needle in the right direction and claim a victory for all knife owners in Tennessee.  Then we can go to work on next year's Knfie Rights bill to finish the job.  That's how you get it done.

Thanks to all for your support.

Well, said.

And yeah, doesn't really fill the larger empty feeling right now, but as you said, it's nonetheless a more positive step than not having happened at all, assuming it's passed. At least you we can't be charged in PossumTrot, TN for some local knife ordinance after it becomes law.

And folks, knife rights are just like gun rights, they need input and money to be protected and enhanced. I'm no shining example of activism or anything, but I am at least a KnifeRights.org member, and encourage any of you who do indeed care about these matters to join too. Just like the NRA, it's the most effective organization to fight for these goals I know of. Read up on their efforts onsite there and see if you don't agree.
