DHS explains ammo purchase reasons. Are they kidding?

The Department of Homeland Security 'explained' why they need to purchase 1.6 billion rounds of ammunition. The conspiracy theorists make me roll my eyes and groan when they start the tinfoil stuff but this 'explanation' makes me feel worse.

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2013/02/14/why-is-department-homeland-security-buying-so-many-bullets/

Their numbers just don't add up.

They say they "use as many as 15 million rounds every year, mostly on shooting ranges and in training exercises." so they'll buy 750 million rounds over the next 4 to 5 years. That's 10 times what they need and, by their estimates, would last 50 years.

They say the rest, which adds up to 850 million rounds, is for ICE and goes as follows.

- 450 million rounds of .40 caliber duty ammunition

- a total of 200 million rounds of rifle ammo

- 176,000 rifle rounds on a separate contract (what's this for?)

- 25,000 blank rounds

That's nearly 200 million rounds short of the total. This explanation doesn't make me feel better, it makes me even more concerned.

There is no conspiracy here nor is it some super secret Obama black ops mission to shoot every citizen 5 times.

It's a contract of supply 5 years worth of ammo to the US government.   There are at least 50-70k gun carrying Federal Agents.  From some postal inspectors to ICE to Indian tribal affairs.  When work out the math and consider a lot of agents must qualify 4 times a year it's really not that many rounds per agent.

Do you remember the explanation about job creation when it didn't happen.  New jobs became "new OR not-lost" jobs.

Maybe this is "new OR not-used" ammo...........

Who the heck knows.  They just make this stuff up.

Budget wasting is what they're doing.

No, it's hoarding for future anticipated events. That ain't my tinfoil, just gut feeling. No other reason for it. Same for those "select fire

PDWs" they claim to need. They already have that crap. They want more.

I really wish the firearms and ammunition industry would completely walk away from this out of control government of ours.

They know they have pushed a lot of buttons within the citizenry. They intended to do it all along. All of this is the result of

socialist policies for years ending up being tipped to the point of "the barrel of a gun". They don't realize that the only thing

happens is unneeded confrontation. They will lose in the end, but many of the citizenry will pay a huge price for this stupidity.

They are not bluffing! They just don't know any other way. Look in the history books, the ones that still have some facts in them.

Is it possible the feds are placing huge orders to tie up production and make ammo more expensive and harder to get for citizens?  It would be a brilliant 'back-door' strategy that could be implemented with absolutely no public oversight...

Sure it is. That's what happens when ideologues in bureacracy do what they damned well please, knowing

nothing else and having no good intentions.

I heard Mark Levin offer his beleif on why the government is stockpiling all this ammo. In his opinion the gov is preparing for the civil unrest that will occur should the United States financial system collapse. They have seen what has happened in Greece, Portugal, and elsewhere. Perhaps he is right. there are nowhere near enough police to handle the chaos that would ensue and they are prepping for this possible situation. Is he right? i dunno but it is possible.

I have to say reading the article didn't make me feel warm and fuzzy inside. I certainly don't believe much (if anything) they release. I do find it interesting that they even chose to address the subject though. Enough people must have been asking the right questions to the right people that they thought they needed to placate those of us who were asking. Actually ... now that I think about, that may make me feel worse. "Don't worry citizens, this is entirely normal and you have nothing to fear from us. We're doing this for your good. <continues stashing away massive amount of ammo for unknown reasons>"

I heard that just tonight on his show. He's right, but what else do you think will happen? Civil unrest, lack of provisions,

money supply dwindling, everyone becomes a target of the government because they by default become a terrorist,

in the government's eyes because they can't handle the problems they created. Actually, we created them being us

allowing this government to devolve like it has.

You have to understand Mark Levin can't go as far as he would have liked. He wouldn't be on the air very long, otherwise.

He's one of the straightest shooters in the media.

I heard him as well. And I agree that he wants to say more, you can hear it in his voice that he feels the need to truly inform us. I guess he's hoping that we see beyond the few words he speaks, and I think most of us do anyway. He is one of my favorites too.

That's a major obstacle. The .gov keeps everyone too scared to say and do what they *really* want to say and do, especially those with the loudest voice. They'll use whatever tactics necessary to ensure The People stay in lock-step.

The .gov tracks everything from internet to instant messages; cell to short wave communications. Not to mention the countless domestic spys used to infiltrate groups, even possibly right here on TGO. They intentionally make it very difficult to "assemble" much of anything.

If The People ever decide it's time to regain control of the country, it will take something very massive. It will take many groups in many location working in unison. As long as everyone is too scared to take the plunge, it will likely take a complete meltdown of our financial system, or something of similar magnitude.

If our financial system does crash, how does the "new" government pay the security forces?  Would the military just casually sit by and watch thousands die in a "civil" disturbances?  I really hope we never have to have those questions answered, but I feel I'm wrong.

They'll pay them like Garufa said, more than likely, until they get their next version of currency, like those different dollars

Matthew Bracken mentioned in his book.

Military would be in question whether or not they even exist at some point. Civil disturbances would be dealt with on a local level

by local people. DHS won't stand a chance to do anything except protect the elites in DC. They may think otherwise, but that's

about it for them, and then their drones.

Of course, all of this is just speculation since when something like this happens, all bets are off.
