My Get Home Bag

Recommended Posts

I'm working on my bag at the moment. Went with a Maxpedition Falcon II. I have a Surefire light, Leatherman OHT, SpyderCo knife, Swedish Steel fire starter, and a Katadyn bottle. I'm going to start building my trauma kit (parents are doctors) and starting to research some MRE substitutes to keep in the back. I've got a basic emergency kit from REI with a safety blanket, mirror, etc.

Learning more and more.

I have come to discover its a never ending process, I replace stuff with "better" stuff and change it around weekly.

Tacoma, what food did you end up choosing for your bag? I assembled 2 more MRE's today using mylar bags. The only purpose of the Mylar bag is to keep everything compact, organized, and sealed. You could use a freezer bag but mylar is better.

Contents include:

Instant Oatmeal x1

Tuna Pack in foil x1

Mountain House Entree x1

Trail mix x1

Granola bar x2

Hot Cocoa/Tea x1

Misc. condiments. (Panera Bread has very small packs of Tabasco for the hot sauce fans out there)

I haven't yet I'm thinking 3 mountain house freeze dried entrees and various protein and granola bars, I tend to agree with the school of thought that I want food to easily eat on the go, only "cooking" 1 time per day. I'll try it out this spring, and another reason, I'm going freeze dried over mre, is that my ghb lives in my truck, I can't take it inside work, and I've heard the heat drastically shortens shelf life and also because freeze dried meals are more readily available. Many of the Mountain House pouches are more than one serving so you could probably get by with 2 pouches to save space.

Good to know as I'm new to freeze dried food, but how many calories are we talking? I'm more interested in calories than servings. Edited by tennessee01tacoma

My gear is still making its way in.  I will post pics when the bag nears completion.

I love my Maxpedition Falcon II pack though!  Obviously well built, it has a great organization system and rides nicely.

Got my Maxpedition Falcon II in today. This thing is rugged. I've started organizing the stuff I already have. The main section is quite large. Think I'll keep most of the food in that pocket.

Subway chocolate chip cookies included?
