STORY LINK WITH PICTURES

It was built with 24 tons of scrap steel from the World Trade Center .

It is the fifth in a new class of warship - designed for missions th at include special operations against terrorists. It will carry a crew of 360 sailors and 700 combat-ready Marines to be delivered ashore by helicopters and assault craft.

Steel from the World Trade Center was melted down in a foundry in Amite , LA to cast the ship’s bow section. When it was poured into the molds on Sept 9, 2003, ‘those big rough steelworkers treated it with total reverence,’ recalled Navy Capt. Kevin Wensing, who was there. ‘It was a spiritual moment for everybody there.’

Junior Chavers, foundry operations manager, said that when the trade center steel first arrived, he touched it with his hand and the ‘hair on my neck stood up.’ ‘It had a big meaning to it for all of us,’ he said. ‘They knocked us down. They can’t keep us down. We’re going to be back.’

The ship’s motto? ‘Never Forget’2703204650103383877S500x500Q85.jpg

Yep, that would be her.

They do look the same Hy. I think the only difference is the San Antonio has 17 on her side and New York has 21. Other than that, I can't tell a difference.

There are probably some minor differences that a very astute person might point out, but for me, the hull number is perfectly sufficient.

Look closely at those two pics (or the others on the USS New York link I posted). Notice how in the close up pic, the "Never Forget" logo is prominently there in two places? But when she's being backed out of the dock, they aren't there anymore. Why would they remove them?

That's something they do for the christening. They display the ship's emblem and motto, but when it's actually put to sea, they remove it.

Yup. And though it might be removed from the exterior, you can bet that the emblem is prominently displayed on the quarterdeck and elsewhere around the ship.
