free cellphones and plans for signing up on obamacare in TN

WOW.   My wife was trying to check out the Exchange plan prices (of course the website didn't work) and I jokingly told her she should check to see if she could get her free Obamaphone with her Obamacare.  It'd be funny if it wasn't so sad.

Not part of the tracking thing at all...

Obamacare was being implemented because the evil insurance companies were making a profit. Now two days into obamacare, there is so much money being made that the government can afford to get people cellphones and plans that will top $1000 a year?

Hope everyone that sat at home on election day in this country gets the biggest whiff of this royal screwing. Edited by Sam1

As well as those who did nothing to support their candidate. Voting only will no longer work. We MUST email, call, donate time or money in order to ensure we win the next election. Oh and do not vote for any incumbent that has proven to not represent us. I am going to vote against any incumbent regardless of party because first term representatives almost always try to do what is best for the county. It is only after they see thy are not getting rich they change and that takes a term or two.

This isn't an Obamaphone. This is a private group (yes they have a federal loan but still are private and have to pay it back) that are offering the phones "included as a cost of their health plan benefits". This is not even free, they pay for it in the cost of the insurance plan.

I'm pretty sure you and I pay for it as well. My health insurance went up $150 a month to "help" pay for obamacare. As far as I'm concerned them bundling in the phone is part of the deal. Someone is paying for it and that someone is us. The government gave them the loan to provide the service, and who pays for that? We do Edited by Wiljo05

We're subsidizing almost everyone getting on obamacare, so yes, you me and everyone else on this board will be paying for them.

Here's the breakdown of how it works:

To be eligible for a smartphone, after paying the first month's premium, members must select a primary care physician from CHA's network within 90 days of their coverage start date. Members must also sign and submit the Community Health Connection agreement and "pledge to stay connected for better health" within 90 days.

Once those requirements are met, the phone -- preloaded with health apps, contact information for a CHA representative, and phone numbers for primary care doctors and after-hours clinic -- will be shipped to members within two weeks.

To stay in the program, CHA Community Health Connection members must create a member profile on the CHA website and schedule and visit their primary care physician within 180 days of coverage start date.

"Members must act on their pledge," said Jerry Burgess, Community Health Alliance president and CEO, in a news release. "They have 180 days to see their doctor. For people who haven't had health insurance, this is a critical step. They will be able to work with their doctor to make a plan to improve their health."

Yes I understand how it works. If you are in one of the groups insurances you could opt for the same benefit. As for who is paying for it, the policy holders associated with that group. A federal loan is just that, a loan. Quite different from a grant in that the group has to repay it...with member dues.

Don't want the phone and don't want to pay for others to have it? Chose a carrier that is outside of the group.

Tax payers are subsidizing the plans for these people.  Doesn't matter if they are in group A, B or C.  We are paying for part of their plan, which is paying for them to get a free phone and plan.  It should be illegal for these companies to do this... What's next, do we start giving them free computers and internet access too and use the excuse that they may need to log online and check their medical records?  We'll be subsidizing that by the end of the year if this is acceptable.

The only way that the people themselves are paying for those phones is if they do not meet any of the subsidy requirements, and my guess is that very few of those people are actually worried about getting a phone with their healthcare.

Just because the group offers cell phones does not mean that they get a larger subsidy than a company that does not offer the same. It is a flat rate per qualified person...not a percentage of what they want to charge total. If that were the case I would think you would see items/services much larger than phones. Heck if it was a percentage, lets just say for math's sake 50% of the plan will be subsidized, then they could say "You pay us 300-500 a month, based on plan package, and we give you a house too!".

But seriously, beyond insuring the loan and making the STANDARD subsidy to the company the taxpayer isn't involved with it at all.

I don't agree with either the subsidies or the mandating of insurance but the bottom line is if they think they can still make money after the subs plus premiums then why not? My thought on all of it is that if there is going to be a mandate and the government is going to pay for part of it then it should just be "free" public healthcare paid for with taxes...still not a good idea but much simpler and keeps private enterprise out of government.

Given that it is mandated and so many companies are cutting full time positions to avoid paying for insurance for all of them, who pays for it then? Most of your lower middle class can't afford health insurance. Heck for most coming up with auto insurance is hard.

Like I said, I'm with you on not subbing it but in order to not do that we can't mandate any more expenses on people. It should have never passed in the first place. But since it did and no one (Obama) is going to sign a nullification of their own law we are pretty well stuck with it until at least 2016 and I bet it gets swept under the rug before then.

ACA is just another burdensome tax on the people without Obama saying he needs to raise taxes. Dumacrats have never seen a tax they don't like. They aim to destroy the working people to subsistence living. Then everyone will get to know what the Marxist/socialist Utopia looks like.

"The Nashville Business Journal is reporting that Community Health Alliance, Tennessee’s Obamacare health insurance co-op.."

This whole report is bogus as regarding the ACA, Daily Caller just as bad as left wing propaganda on this one.

TN has no ACA exchange program. The only way to sign up is to go through the federal sign up options, just like any of the other 25 states or so that didn't set up exchanges.

There are no independent contractors for ObamaCare except the official state run exchanges. The CHA is some kind of insurance co-op, but can't "sell" you Obamacare, ie, there's no connection to ACA at all.
