IWB & OWB Holster suggestions for my wife. S&W Shield

Recommended Posts

My wife has decided that she wants to go ahead and get her carry permit and has chosen the Shield as her 1st carry pistol. BTW she has a full frame 9mm of her own as well as other pistols in the safe so this isn't her 1st time shooting but rather will be her 1st time carrying.

I'm not real sure where to start with holster shopping with her but I would like to find her an IWB, OWB and a holster that works good in a purse and the like. I don't know much about holsters for women like, do the same folks that make great men's holsters also make great holsters for women or are there others that are more dedicated to women that would be better options? or, Are there certain styles that work better for women? I know that in the end there's no substitution for actually buying and wearing one a while to know for sure if you like it but I would like to narrow the options a little bit because I don't want to get her a couple to try out and them be horrible and cause her to assume they all will be and just give up and resort to full time purse carry. Gentlemen and ESPECIALLY the ladies, any help and info will be greatly appreciated!

My wife does not like a holster that is on her waist, to bulky she says.

With the clothes most females wear it is hard to find them something

that hides well and "fells" right, we went to a gun show to try and find something, found nothing.

I know I will get nailed for this, females like comfort and when it comes to

this kind of thing that is what they look for.

My wife carries her LCR on her hip, just not much.

Take her and the pistol to a gun show, try a few out.

First off, does she, or will she, wear a belt? If she does, then that's half the battle right there. Women's fashion is usually not belt friendly and many women will just not wear a belt.

The next question is, what position will she be carrying in? Many women prefer appendix carry (me for one).

An awesome IWB holster is the Crossbreed Supertuck. I wear mine at one o'clock and it's so comfortable, that I often have to feel to make sure it's there.

As far as holsters designed specifically for women.....there's just not many of those out there. However, I just ordered a crossdraw holster from www.SideGuardHolsters.com and they specialize in custom holsters for women. From special colors and exotic skins to actually working with the individual to "come up with a solution that will work for them."

My sister carries in her purse and she has been looking for a holster to keep her gun protected and concealed within her purse. I showed her several different kinds before she finally decided on a "Sneaky Pete" style holster. These are the ones that look like big cell phone cases. She liked it because the gun could be easily accessed, but it was still 100% covered and concealed. A good option for purse carry imho.

Hope that helps. :)

Well the bright side of this is that she doesn't have her carry permit yet and we're already very busy through the first of the year so we've got some time to shop around and find ones that she likes or at least can live with until she gets used to it and forgets that it's there anyways. I didn't think about going to the gun show to try holsters out but that sounds like what we need to do as soon as she has the gun.

There is a young woman on YouTube that does a lot of good videos on carry holsters, guns, and other accessories for women. Can’t think of her name right now, maybe someone else knows it?

That’s her thumbsup.gif

Click on her video page and she has a list of a bunch of holster reviews. (as well as guns and other stuff)

Awesome! i'll sit down with her and flip through the videos and see if anything strikes her fancy. I've started kind of explaining the pros & cons of different holster designs and carrying positions so her seeing someone else reinforcing what i've told her will go a long ways. Maybe the videos will narrow it down some and then we can go to the gun show armed with that info. Thanks guys.

I would recommend that you start with this video. In it she goes through multiple options for weapons, holsters & dress. My wife found it to be extremely informative and helpful.

Well first off, the holster with the Blue panel on the front is the same color that i'll be having the frame ceracoated for her. As for the belt thing.... that could be tough.. See I married a "princess" :) so i'm not sure how i'm going to get the whole belt thing in play but I don't see much way around it. There are a few options such as the Spanx type spandex deal with the pocket built in for a pistol that i'd like to get for her as well as one for inside her purse so that it is shielded from hands that are endlessly digging at Mary Poppins like depth for something that may of may not be in there   but there really isn't a substitute for having it located somewhere around your waistline. I guess we'll have to really make a strong effort to find a belt that she can live with. Are there any that function okay without a belt? I wear a Crossbreed type knockoff and I don't attach it to my belt but I do have a belt on which adds some rigidity to it indirectly. I'm getting worried that I may have celebrated her picking out her first carry pistol to early because i'm already getting the feeling that picking a gun was the easy part and picking the holsters is going to be the tough part of the experience!

Oh yea, Yes this has helped more than you know! I'll look through the website that you provided with her tomorrow night.
