About to start another AR build…. Stay tuned

Recommended Posts

I would send those pictures to Geissele.

I checked their website at the product description….Our SMR MK1 is designed to fit the M4 Carbine and all mil-spec AR-15 variants.

Doesn't say anything about billet uppers.. :(  I should have done some more googling…..

In the mock up without the barrel nut, the rail tops don't line up.

I know.  I was just showing how the upper is supposed to slide into the rail so that when you screw down the locking tab screws, they tighten against the side of the upper.

The barrel nut is what holds the rail in proper alignment.

Apparently it will fit on a Seekins or Spikes billet but not a Mega or Larue, per ARFCOM This one http://www.rainierarms.com/?page=shop/detail&product_id=3021 Do you have access to someone with a CMT upper to try? The pin had to be filed down to fit into the lower.

My lower does not have a notch cutout in the safety hole to allow for the pin in the safety bar.

The "lawyer/warranty/liability" pin they put in the 45 degree safety bar so it won't fit into a 90 degree marked lower without modification

Notice the bolt catch pin is threaded.  Uses a 1/16 allen wrench.  No need for roll pin/punch.

haha, yeah i was pretty well set on the rail :)  The place is called National Precision Machining Services in Franklin.  They do a small jobs and big jobs and actually have done barrel work (fluting, threading, shortening etc) and machining for Franklin PD and individual like myself.

Black sharpie…  :pleased:

No they are going to machine only what needs to be to allow for the locking tabs to slide over the upper.  So the machined areas should be covered up by the tabs.  I was planning to get the rifle coated down the road so it should be okay for now.  Im not going to be swimming with it in salt water and bashing it around.

I would tend to the you're right, I mean think about how many AR's there are running around that have scuffs and or scrapes that are through the coating and they're not rotting away because of it. As far as the machining goes, I tend to not alter what the manufacturers have engineered but in a case such as this where you already have THE handguard you wanted, I would have done the same thing.Looking forward to seeing it finished.

Well, here are the result.  They did an awesome job and did it in less than 24 hour turnaround.  The machining work is excellent.  They removed minimal amount of material to clear the tab.  The machined part is covered up by the tabs so its barely noticeable.  Their sharpie skills needs a little work though… \

Overall, I am very pleased with the result.  I would recommend these guys for sure.

Here she is.  Still have to order the spring kit for the silent captured spring to fine tune it, but its basically done.  I may try their buffer and spring to see which one feels better. BUIS down the road and I still haven't figured out which weapon light to go with.  Probably the Inforce WML and thorntail offset combo.
