Stag Arms 6 Super Varminter Review

First a little background:

I've owned a Stag Arms model 1 for a bit now, and after shooting a Bushmaster and a few others I was of the opinion these rifles are comparable with the best, if not better than its competition. I deal with Stag customer service through my FFL and can testify to their A+ service and support. On a personal/side note, I'm glad to support an American business too.

I've been wanting a good bi-pod target rifle for a while now and after staring at the model 6 we had on the shelf, I decided to take the plunge on her. Since its an OR setup, I obviously had to swipe a scope off the shelf as well.... I decided on the Konus Pro 6x40 w/ Illuminated 30/30 reticle. Yea, its a bit weak for a varminter gun, but most of my shots are 100-150 yards and this is about perfect for my personal needs. Swiped a pair of x high mount leupold rings while I was at it.... gun store ownership has its priveleges but gets expensive, ya know?

It took about 20 rounds of ammo to get the scope dialed in. I'm using basic target ammo, PMC Bronze 55gr. Now to test the claimed 1/2 MOA Stag claims with their rifle. I was not able to produce 1/2" with a 5 shot group as it always seemed I had a flyer, but I could produce 1/2" group of 3 shots consistently. 5 shot groups opened up to ~1" MOA, which in my opinion is still excellent considering the factory loaded 55gr ammo I was/am using. I shot ~60 rounds before the county police showed up telling me someone phoned in a 'loud shooting'.... I swear people need smacked sometimes. (although I did maybe sell an LCP to one of the officers... roflmao)

The rifle is the real deal... I was shooting from prone position at 100yards using a harris bi-pod with the above results. I can imagine with no/light wind and perhaps Hornady Match BTHP ammunition the 1/2" claimed MOA would be easily done with this rifle. If I had to pick anything about it... Stag's rifle cases suck. The rifle with a scope on it barely fits and if I got a different/bigger scope it would definitely not fit.... speaking of the scope...

Konus Pro 6x40 Illuminated 30/30 Reticle

I have to say, for the money and warranty these scopes are the ticket. The reticle is etched on most all their models so high recoiled rifles do not damage them. I wouldn't compare them to $1000 scopes, but I've literally held a similar powered Konus right beside a new Nikon Monarch and I have to say the clarity of both scopes are identical. Oh yea, the price on the Konus is 1/3 of the Nikon. The illuminated model is really cool in lower light situations, ala dusk/dawn. With adjustable intensity the middle crosshair lights up red to ease the aim / sight of the target. It works and looks great. Although I'm eyeing a 3-24x44 model, I highly doubt I'll grab one just because I don't need it for the target practice I do. If I join a club range later, I may just to try out the 500+ yd shots.

All in all, the rifle can be had under $1000 at most Stag Dealers and the scopes are a bargain as well. Be sure to check out Konus optics at your local gun shop next time you visit.

Very nice. I know that I'm enjoying the Stag I found down in Elizabethton:up:. Stag makes some good guns, priced fairly and American made.

I had a 24 inch bull barrel upper and wanted to use it for varmint hunting, but just got to heavy to carry around the woods. Shot great though. Congrats by the way.
