Building a survival Vehicle

Recommended Posts

Depends on scenario but generally,

4x4 built on truck frame not car
Good sized all terrain tires, usually 33"+
Vehicle must be in good repair and properly maintained.
Having necessary gear on board.

Thats really all that is necessary. Of course other things can be very nice to have such as diff lockers, powerful v8, offroad bumpers, winches, armor, etc. But not necessary.

Oh and absolutely necessary is the obligatory TGO sticker, lol

Base your approach on whatever the vehicle you are driving is, not the off road hunting/mudding 4x4 at home is as that one won't help you if your not near it or in it. With that approach everything in every vehicle to keep it running and get you home either by driving or walking. The big truck? Unless you've got a secure place to go to where is it going to get you too? In and of itself 4x4 trucks and such aren't always the sole solution to a problem.

I would think the most important things in a survival vehicle would be a full tank of fuel, At least 3 firearms with plenty of ammo for all three, food and water and a secured destination in which to go and plans on remaining there for a long period of time so location must be well supplied and stocked with necessities. Last but not least a form of communication and a source of keeping up with outside world. AM/FM radio and maybe CB radio...................jmho       P.S.  Make sure if you have a best friend (Canine) that you bring them along.

4x4 doesn't mean an offroad/hunting truck. Most modern fullsized pickups and suvs can fit 33" tires without any other modifications. And contrary to popular belief, they dont murder your fuel mileage.

With the proliferation of technology packed into modern vehicles, there is no reason not to have a 4wd capable vehicle, aside from not wanting one.

But, yes this should be the vehicle you drive everyday not a deuce and a half sitting in the back corner of your property that never gets driven, just waiting for TEOTWAWKI Edited by nightrunner

Concur, have owned several 4x4's from a CJ2A to an F-150, all were set up as primary on road vehicles with good ground clearance. Am currently weighing options on another used F150 standard cab if I find the right deal.

Got the 4x4 truck and AWD car to get home and around. But when they shoot off a EMP bomb I will have to go to old school. The horse, good low tech transportation. It has served us well for many mango seasons. Edited by frankmako

Tools, parts, and know-how to fix what might break.

Fuel.  Lots and lots of fuel.

Really good mufflers.  The world will be a very quiet place in a TEOTWAWKI situation.  Remember how quiet it was the evening of 9/11/01?  You could hear a car from miles away.  That sound will attract attention.

A Mindset that is looking ahead to when that vehicle ceases to serve the mission (keep you & yours alive & well) and has a clear definition of what that point in time looks like.  I fail to see how useable such a desirable "Target" would be.  I would rather be a part of a large, large group.  Such a group would have the human resources available to deploy and retain such an asset.  Single family in a "situationally attractive" resource... ?  Dead meat.

If it was a true SHTF, things would be liquid and true knowledge of your surroundings, threat levels, etc. would be very, very low.  "contact" is the only way you would gain knowledge of others' intent.  I'm sure there are quite a few who have patrolled in mixed (friendly/foe) societies who can tell us how "fun" that is.

If you are looking to survive the worst of the worst, you would need mini-civi-platoons, covering expertise in the important areas: medicine, mechanical, agriculture, psychology/leadership, and, of course, kick-buttkiss.  Discipline and buy-in will be the key to keeping "utopia" from unravelling, so psychology/leadership may be the most important piece.

With that said, if all that is in place, I would think a Marauder (or two) would be a nice addition.  :)

If I'm building it?  ..Toyota frame and drive-train.  light armor for the passengers, heavy armor for the fuel tank and engine bay.
