States Recognizing TN Permits (Reciprocity) With Links

Recommended Posts

Made this the other day. It has links to each state that has reciprocity with TN. Some states don't list much, but this will get you as close as you can get to the right info if you need to research laws, regulations, etc., pertaining to carrying in other states that recognize TN Handgun Permits.

no surprise with any of these-- with a few exceptions, most of them are virtually socialist paradise nanny states, or close to it.

Thanks for your research efforts!

Note that IL does now allow out of state permit holders to keep their loaded heater in vehicle while in the state. Which is rather surprising really.

I haven't lost anything in any of these states including Illinois so there's no reason for me to go to any. The only reason I went to Illinois back in 09 was to land at Midway and change planes to Salt Lake City. I carried no firearm to Utah, Idaho, Wyoming and Montana for that week but just knowing I could have if I wanted to made me feel like I was still in America.

RV/Car Carry Without A Permit/License

You can’t carry a loaded firearm in a vehicle without a valid Permit/license.

Section 40

(e) Nothing in this Act shall prohibit a non-resident from transporting a concealed firearm within his or her vehicle in Illinois, if the concealed firearm remains within his or her vehicle and the non-resident :

(1) is not prohibited from owning or possessing a firearm under federal law;

(2) is eligible to carry a firearm in public under the laws of his or her state or territory of residence, as

evidenced by the possession of a concealed carry license or permit issued by his or her state of

residence, if applicable; and

(3) is not in possession of a license under this Act. If the non-resident leaves his or her vehicle unattended, he or she shall store the firearm within a locked vehicle or locked container within the vehicle in accordance with subsection (b) of Section 65 of this Act. I drive to MO&IN quite often and was glad to see IL new carry law,I do not stop there and spend any money until full carry is in effect as they are under a

lawsuit to allow it. The rest of the states are fly in for me so it don't matter.

IL. will allow a TN HCP Holder to carry handgun loaded in vehicle.  If You get out for gas or whatever it has to remain locked in vehicle.

My Inlaws live in Champagne Illinois. We go at least 2 times a year to visit. I can't stand traveling into that state. At least now I can carry in the car while driving. When I called the state a couple years ago to clarify the law change the lady I spoke with told me I could carry in the vehicle but when I got out to walk into the house I would have to empy the gun, and lock it in a box before getting out of the car...... SURE. This has nothing to do with the law but I find it funny. My wife's cousin works in the Governors office and is a Gay, gun toting conservative Liberal..... I think that's the best way to describe him. We had a few intersting conversations.

IL would be a nice state if you did not have to drive through Chicago Or Springfield to get to it. A lot of hunters and shooters and most of the state has the

best deer, upland and waterfowl hunting in the states. It is a shame a handful of libs turned the state the way it is and a shame all the good people let it happen.

At least it is starting to go in a better direction. Maybe we can get a nationwide carry and  not have to check each state when we travel.

Didn't VA reverse this policy after all other states refused to give reciprocity to VA citizens with Concealed Carry Permits?

Per the app 'Legal Heat', permitted non-resident may possess a handgun in their auto in Illinois.  Law is very similar to TN non-permit carry.  Also reference Illinois Republican Caucus, page 7 :http://www.senategop.state.il.us/Portals/0/14 Concealed Carry v4.pdf

Virginia never revoked reciprocal carry, but they tossed it around and created a political firestorm.  As OS said there was a negotiated compromise within the State capital that put the brakes on it.

I would be very careful with using these posts for guidance as some date back to 2015. Going directly to the information sources is more likely to provide current information on laws that seem to be changing.

When I get time, I'll re-check the links and update them.

I only raised the VA issue because this state was not listed in the original list of reciprocal states at the top of this thread.

Minnesota dropped TN. because TN. now recognizes military below the age of 21 to carry.  In stead of discounting the "kids" in its law, Minnesota simply chose to drop TN. completely.  It has now become the "People's Republic of Minnesota."
