or their perversions thereof

Key words quoted to show differentiation.

I do not believe there is a perversion of the religion of islam at hand. Have people of all religions killed through the years? Certainly.

Are there any killing right now, other than these guys, that are actually endorsed by their religion and instructed to do so in the religious text they study? If there are I'm not aware of any.

I think I've made my point. I honestly do believe in equal rights for all men and women in this country as guaranteed by our constitution. But I also believe that your rights stop where mine start. If you believe in a religion that teaches you that you ought to kill me simply for not believing the same as you, I believe your rights are pushing a little too far toward my side of the line we've drawn 'tween us. To put it into a western context, it would be like holding all Christians accountable for the exact wording of the Old Testament and its list of punishable by death edicts.  Plenty of words there for a non-Christian to be worried over if they take it at face value.

Beliefs don't infringe on your rights, but actions are another story.  Being ready for that is one reason why we have guns, right? :)

Not a lot of old testament syle killings going on these days. Seems like our Muslim friends are just getting warmed up. It not just a few either. Doesn't matter if it's a minority to me. Ben Shapiro kinda lays it out here...

Freedom of Speech simply means the government can't prosecute you for speaking against them. Speech has plenty of consequences the Constitution can't protect you from. Plenty of people have been fired for speech, killed for speech. Say what you have to say, but know the consequences and be ready to face them.

The people in the wrong here are not those making fun of the belief system, but the two dead suspects. I had an atheist friend come up to me 8 months ago and noticed I was wearing a crucifix. He remarked, "There's a dead Jew on your neck!" I laughed because I dig politically incorrect humor ESPECIALLY about stuff I care about, but also if I had decked him I would've been facing an assault charge and would've deserved it.

There should be zero consequences for speaking your mind. Even the Westboro loonies should be allowed to spew hate. Satanists too.

Does anyone else remember the Muslim Day event held on the Texas State Capitol steps awhile back? They exercised their free speech right and were met with 1 woman protesting that their god is not our God. She was exercising her right to speak freely and was escorted away. No bullets went flying. The issue is actions vs. words. I can say that my dog's crap is holy and doesn't stink but when I fling that sh*t in you face for you to smell....that crosses the line. Actions make the difference. The Muslims are pushing their beliefs by violent actions and it is not by a militant minority. Our God given, Constitionally protected rights are being eroded day by day. A time is soon approaching that we stand up and fight or kneel down and die. Actions make the difference. God save the USA.

"should" and "Are".....two separate things

I agree they should be able to hold this event without disturbance. But reality is obviously different.

I agree with Mikegideon. They did prove a point.

A right not exercised is lost.
Also, anyone who says "I believe in free speech, but..." doesn't really.

Bingo. I believe this was more of a 1st. Amendment demonstration more than an anti-islamic demonstration, not only to show freedom hating Muslims that we wont bow down to terrorist threats but to also show freedom hating liberals we wont bow down to the idiocy of political correctness. Of course the liberals will be quick to defend the discusting youtube challenge of people stomping and dancing on the American flag as their 1st.Amendment right but these same Anti-American liberals would probably ban drawings of Muhammid as hate speech. They believe in only the speech they personally approve of and I would bet there are many who wish the terrorists would have been sucessful. And yes this was a "good idea" because it brought out these terrorists and caused them to be terminated from society. If they didn't try this at this particular event which sounds like at this time that it was being watched because of threats, then it would have been at some other event and good decent people would have been murdered. Because it happened this way only two pieces of human garbage were eradicated and no decent people were killed. Maybe it's a good tactical strategy to provoke them where police are present, waiting to take them out. This event didn't cause these two to become terrorist, they would have tried or comitted an attack somewhere else. Also, I have a feeling that the people inside the building wern't exactly defensless.

The violent response is aside from everything else that went into that event.  Though I will say the actions that happened weren't unpredictable.

If a "Mohammed Art Exhibit and Contest" isn't a bigoted event against Islam, I don't know what is.  It is protected speech in our country, though.  But I'll bet a brick of .22LR there were plenty of high and mighty religious types there who get offended when their religion has scorn heaped upon it.  Just because they aren't opening fire doesn't mean they aren't hypocrites.

And I would bet a lot of those high and mighty types have been used to getting their religion scorned for years, but they haven't killed anyone.

This "art" event reminds me of open carry--yes it's your right, but sometimes it isn't prudent.

In this country we should be free to say whatever we want to say. If someone wants to have a contest drawing Mohammed, then so be it! I celebrate their ability to do such a thing, and would do so even if it meant a contest involving Jesus, Buddha, etc..

suspicious makes an excellent point here; he is dead right....

Why should we be concerned that some nut fringe group doesnt like somethin here in this country...?

We have the Bill of Rights that guarantees freedom of speech and freedom of association... If you decide not to do somethin just to placate some bunch of sons and daughters of satan who dont happen to like what you are doin; just what kind of freedom is that...?   Ya just as well be livin in a police state or a tyranny if you "self muzzle" yourselves so as not to offend some son of a b**ch who doesnt happen to like what ya are sayin...

We can quibble about the "wisdom" of havin a Muhammad cartoon gathering and exposition'; but i'm ok with it, and you should be too...

I say that you cant claim to be an American and not be willin to stand up for freedom of speech, no matter how blasphemous and heinous to some hearers... We dont censor speech here, we grade it and discuss it...If you censor it, it's a short step to controlling it... That, my friends, is tyranny...

I say, the hell with the muslums and anyone else who doesnt like it... Let em go where they demand those sorts of things; it aint here...

Disliking the Baltimore rioters doesn't make me a bigot. Calling them thugs doesn't make me racist. Disliking a 'religion' that tells its followers to enslave or kill nonbelievers, & subvert law and government to establish'religious' rule doesn't make me a bigot either.

But go ahead and say it does, if you like. The word (like racist) has lost its sting. The ability to see something (or someone) for what it is, and the right to call it what it is, isn't something I am anxious to surrender.

All you gotta do to become an official racist is to disagree with Obama. You, me, and a hundred million or so others. Yep... lost its sting.

Calling someone a bigot or racist these days is meaningless, it deserves a, "yeah whatever" type of response. It is funny when some niave liberal calls someone a islamaphobe or bigot for critisizing Islam, they are defending real bigots, racial bigots, religious bigots, gender bigots and as far as terror attacks and murders, Muslim terrorists have the old KKK beat all to hell on that.

This incident in Texas, I for one am glad they did it because it probably saved lives, it brought out a couple of Islamic terrorists and they were terminated before they murdered a bunch of people.

This "art show" hardly falls into the category of something someone may have decided not to do to placate others.  On the contrary, its sole purpose was simply to antagonize Mulsims.  In this respect, the organizers aren't much different than the Westboro loons.  I'll probably never be known as a Muslim sympathizer, but I don't go out of my way to piss them off, much less organize an event and offer $10k to whoever can piss them off the most.  If the Westboro bunch ever gets whacked, will you be posting about tyranny and censorship?

I'm wishing the officer a speedy recovery, but I'd also like to know who thought that this contest was a good idea? It seems that this is the kind of thing that you do to create controversy under the cover of free speech.

Based upon the current climate that we live in, I'm certain that the organizer expected protest at the minimum with this kind craziness also as a strong possibility.

So if you stick to your position consistently, then you also blame the girl who was raped because she was dressed provocatively?

People have been doing controversial art for a long time. In fact, several art exhibits have expressly tried to be provocative towards other religions. I don't recall shootings and attempted bombings as part of the discourse.

Consider this: If they cannot have any form of depiction of their prophet then nothing drawn depicts the profit for no one knows what he looks like.

No one knows what Mohammed looks like just as we don't know what Jesus looks like. [No, the picture that we associate with Jesus was drawn long after his death]
