Getting started in leather working?

Recommended Posts

Can any of the resident leather guru's give me some direction on where I should start with leather working? I'm sure Id start making belts, pouches, slings, etc. Basically easier straight stuff but also want to work my way up to holsters and more difficult items. I have always loved anything leather and have said it's a skill I will learn one day. Well I am ready to do that. I'm sure it's best to start out by hand sewing and all that but if there is some certain equipment that I will need no matter of my preferences then I am willing to go ahead an buy it. I'm mainly looking for some recommended reading material or sources to go for supplies.

Tandy leather company offers some really nice starter and project kits. Pre cut holster kits and knife sheaths are just a Google search away. Said kits have been fun projects for me and absent a good leather workers assistance been educational as well. I did go to my public library and read all of the leather working books. In the end it's a true gift and talent.

Used to do leather work many years ago. Mostly leather carving, I still have the tools and stamps and your welcome to them if your ever near Chattanooga. Just send me a PM.

Tandy leather is a good place to start.

There is a Tandy store off Harding in Nashville close to Sams. I don't think it's been open too long.

It's on Nolensville Rd. Inside, you'll find everything you need as well as a helpful and knowledgeable staff to answer any questions you might have.

Tandy has moved to Harding Pike over by Donelson Rd. across the street from Sam's. If you've been to their old place, it's worth checking out their new digs. They've got a lot more space, and it's a really nice shop.

I did not know that. I haven't been there in a while. Thanks.
