Selling shotgun to out of state friend

Recommended Posts

Should be simple but ... I am meeting a Louisiana friend in Anniston, Alabama.  He will be purchasing his first M1 Garand at the Civilian Marksmanship Program - South Store and he is topping trees!

But, he is also buying a 20 gauge semi-auto hunting shotgun from me. It is my understanding that Federal Law will require me to ship the shotgun to an FFL dealer in Louisiana in order for him to take legal possession. : (

Wouldn't it be nice if Federal Law allowed us to walk into an FFL dealer in Anniston, present I.D.s and do the transfer?

Please chime in if I am mis-interpreting the legal requirement of this friend to friend out of state shotgun sale.

Thanks.

I believe a local FFL could do it on a long gun, but I doubt they will.

Thanks for the input. While we're in Anniston, I will call a local shop or two to inquire. Doesn't hurt; I might get a pleasant surprise.

If neither state prohibits the sale or transfer (LA / AL / TN) then you shouldn't have a problem doing a transfer at an FFL.  I bought a long gun from an FFL in Florida.  At first they weren't sure they could do it because the states didn't border each other but once they looked into it and realized that the weapon and the sale / transfer was completely legal in both states they said no problem.  I'm not an expert here, just sharing my experience.  I'd contact the local FFL in Alabama prior to the trip to make sure they are good with it (I also have no knowledge of the laws in LA since I never travel there).

If this was a handgun it would have to go to the FFL in the state of residence of buyer.

If he is buying the M-1 Garand from a FFL dealer that may be the FFL to get in touch with about doing your transaction with him. Just an idea.............................

The M1 will be purchased at the CMP South Store rather than an FFL dealer.

But, it can't hurt to call some Anniston gun shops to see if they can and are willing process the hunting shotgun.

Thanks for the suggestions all.
