Preserving a deer tail ?

Recommended Posts

A friend of mine once preserved a deer tail for me so I could give it to my son. I am hunting this year and got one but going out again today. I want to try and get a tail preserved for my 8 yr old daughter. She loves stuff like that . From what I remember , my friend got the tail and pulled out some tendons and shoved some salt into the area I think  and it seemed to preserve it really well. I just cant rememer exactly what he did . Do you guys know ? All I want to do it get my daughter a deer tail with the hair still attached and preserved . Thanks for any information . Oh and wish me good luck ! I am a meat hunter and not a trophy hunter so it may be a doe or a buck .

I did a coon tail once, all I did was to "peel" it down taking the bone/cartilage out leaving it inside out.  Then I scraped as much fat off of it I could and put a mess load of salt on it, once dry I finished taking most of the fat off then reversed it again.

I use borax after defleshing the bone. Borax is a good drying agent. My dad used to do some taxidermy years ago and that was what he used.

I use the deer tails for tying flies or give them to friends who tie flies.
