Purpose of strobe light capability of TLR-1 HL

Recommended Posts

To disorient your target

I never considered that a strobe would be more disorienting than a really bright light.  I'm going to shoot with it activated tonight and see how it affects my accuracy as compared to the regular beam.  I just want to make sure I'm not the one who's disoriented!

The strobe doesn't bother me when I'm standing behind it. Bear in mind that a light is necessary to see your target, but also gives away your position. Anything to minimize that can be helpful

That makes sense.  I've got an Armasight thermal imaging weapon sight on one of my hog rifles, which allows me to hunt without using a light.  The results are quite impressive.

Shine it at your wife while she is trying to sleep. You will see it's effect. Make sure you don't have it mounted to your gun when you do so.

And make sure she isn't close to the gun while you do this as well...

It is my understanding that the strobing function of high intensity lights was originally designed for Law Enforcement low light subduing tactics. Basically one officer blinds the subject with the high intensity strobe, thus concealing the other officers movements allowing them to circle and close on the subject. While constant on beams can be blinding and disorientating, the rapid strobing in theory prevents the eyes from adjusting and picking up peripheral movement. (According to John Hodaway of Nighthawk Custom and adjunct instructor for Massad Ayoob Group training.) This effect is negated if the subject has a light of their own or if there is enough ambient light to prevent adequate concealment during the off cycles of the strobe.
