Bullets marking in press

Recommended Posts

Newbie to reloading here, so looking for some idea's?

My die's appear to be marking the bullets after seating? There is a circular 'ring' around them after pressing, that is not there on the new one's. Hoping it shows in the pic:

These are Berry's Bullets 124 grain plated FMJ 9mm. The loads operate fine and seem accurate enough, but I'm curious if it can be prevented, or if it might be having an affect I'm not seeing?

I had one round out of the entire batch of ~60+ that failed to load up the feed ramp, but I was also using a smaller charge (3.6 gr vs. 3.9 gr), so am chalking that one up to the powder and not the bullet (OAL might have been off by a hair, too, I'm just learning to reload).

Thanks for the feedback.

That is from the bullet seating plug not fitting the bullet shape exactly. Won't hurt anything, but if it bothers you, take the seating plug out and lightly polish or reshape it to fit your bullet better. I've shot thousands of cast boolits with the same ring on them.

Have fun in your reloading, and never stop learning!

It would be nice to have a seating plug that fits every bullet profile, but with all of the different manufacturers there are just to many variables.

You'll never be able to fit them all perfectly.

I load all different makes, weights and shapes of bullets and use one seating plug with no ring on the bullets, but I seat and crimp separately.

Contact die company and ask about getting a custom seating plug that actually FITS the bullet.

If you get a custom seating plug, ask for the contact point on the bullet to be as low on the bullet ogive as possible and NOT touch the bullet meplat.

If you have to use generic seating stems, find the best fit. Again, call the company and they may have different seating plugs.

PS: the marks aren't going to effect anything unless you are shooting handguns at 100 yards or more, but I consider the best way to get the bullet seated straight is by using a properly fitted seating plug.
