Aside from putting together an overall strategy to target criminal networks, and changing tactics on how some areas are patrolled by police...there really isn't anything they can do.  State law isn't going to let the Metro Council make any drastic changes (not that they would work), and adding enough officers to move the needle would present a fiscal challenge the city can't really afford.

I remember back in the mid 90's you may have hear of 5-6 shooting a week in Nashville. Now it's 4-5 a night it seems. The town has grown leaps and bounds which means the low life population has grown with it. It's not a safe place at night anymore and the undesirables have no decency or common sense. Everyone owes them something and since nobody is giving anything away they feel it's their right to take it.

The law enforcement community has been pointing out that every major city that is run by a democratic mayor is having these same issues so it is nothing new. The only thing new about Nashville is more and more folks moving from other democratic major cities and states like New York, Michigan. and other northen states are voting these democrats like Barry into office trying to create the same situation they moved away from.................jmho.

When Metro gets done with their gentrification more and more of the people that cause the crime will be in the surrounding areas on top of the mess they already have.

^^^This.

Just look at East Nashville.  People paid crazy prices for houses a few years ago, and effective law enforcement could have completely changed the neighborhood, but Metro let the thugs keep their stronghold in the name of gentrification.

Violence of any type is perpetuated by people. Focus on the people who do the violence.

Exactly. But that means focusing on the economy. The more people that have good paying jobs (like manufacturing, not fast food and tourism) the less crime there will be. Of course that means actually getting something done instead of making a lot of noise about something you can’t do much about.

The key is the economy and that requires jobs. Plenty of cities have gun control that doesn't work.

I assumed there's not a whole lot  they could change  on the local level with regards to gun laws. It's just a little disconcerting to see the topic broached when we know any discussion is only going to revolve around and effect legal carriers of firearms.

I'm expecting a substantial (25-50%) property tax increase in the next couple of years to help fund more officers on the street, among other things on Barry's agenda

The really worrisome thing is that when places like Nashville, Memphis, etc. start really whining then they can screw up things for the entirety of the state.  I suspect that is especially true of Nashville where many of the legislators probably live and certainly where the legislative bodies meet.  Just as many people say that New York City screws up the entire state of New York, cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco screw up all of California and increasingly liberal, large cities in other traditionally pro-gun states have started screwing up the entirety of those states I would hate to see one or two cities in Tennessee screw  things up for all of us.

Glad to see you mentioned Tourism as a type of employment. All I see Barry talking about now is bringing more Professional Sports teams to Nashville. She is trying to replace Country Music with Sports arena's. We have Pro Hockey, Pro Football a double AA Baseball team and she wants to add Pro Soccer to the list. All of those jobs will be tourist related which will mean more tourism dollars coming to Nashville and more low paying tourism jobs. She needs to be focusing on industry jobs that will have good pay......................jmho
