Thanks for the advise. I am also looking at an AR. I am looking into a flat top that I will use for hunting/plinking.

I have both and I cant complain about either. I use both for hunting but not HD. For HD the 500 safety may be easier to operate in time of distress, but if you practice like we all should the safety operation should not be a problem. I don't think you can go wrong with the 500 or 870.

The only time I had a problem like this with my 870 I figured out it was the shells. I was in Tunica MS shooting the skeet range. I had shot a whole round with my own Remington shells, we went to shoot the 2nd round with Fiocchi shells supplied by the range. The brass on the Fiocchi shells was thin causing the brass to swell up in the chamber making nearly impossible to pump. I switched back to my Remington shells and have never had another problem.
