  1. Enjoy it as is or modify it to death. Your choice. They are really fine 1911's. I have read that they were very popular with pistol smiths due to the supposedly better grade of steel. Chrome lined bore too. Shoulda bought a gross of them when they $200.

  2. I too am just starting to consider building.

How cost effective is it to roll your own versus buying an entry level Del-Ton, Armalite, Bushmaster, S&W, etc.? Each of these and others can be had for around $800-850. Is there a significant savings or is more of an "I built this myself" sort of thing.

  3. ... at 92, you try anything to enable you to more easily see the target, no matter how "ridiculous"!... even though I no longer am able to shoot in a standing position for more than ten minutes, I'm still able to drive myself to the range at least twice a month, weather and aches permitting.

Wow! That's fabulous you can do that.

I hope I hold up that well.

  4. Back in 2006 I purchased an original all matching MP40 from an acquaintance. He had purchased it in 1976 from the Vet that brought it back from Vietnam. He told me up front that he paid the fellow $200 for it but he almost walked away because the $200 tax doubled the price of the gun. Of course he didn't feel too bad about that anymore when I handed him a check for $xx,000.

Before May, 1986 machine guns were pretty cheap. For the most part nobody wanted them. Then when the Feds closed the door all that changed. Within a few years people started to realize the investment potential and the prices began to climb. They seem to have peaked about 3 years ago and since then, with the recession and all, they have flattened out, maybe even gone down a bit.

  5. It's a nice gun, but I don't think you missed a steal. EAA is a tough sell on the used market. People want Glock, Sig, HK, Smith and Wesson...not really EAA. I wouldn't pay more than 350 for a well used EAA Elite Match. Less than 250 for a regular EAA.

+1 on part of what you said. The Witness series is the best kept secret in firearms. A really good pistol.

But I would allow $325 regular, $450 Match. Things have gone up you know.

  6. Norinco made a copy of the Browning that was imported by Interarms for a while.

Check and see if yours is Belgium or Japan (Miroku). Averages around $150 more for the Belgium ones on the used market. That said... don't sell it. They are such neat rifles.

  7. It's quite an empowering feeling to be able to sit in your home and talk to someone in Europe or South America without any outside assistance, don't even need public electricity, just a car battery.

Of course this last sun spot cycle has been the pits. Can't hardly talk across the street.

That's part of the reason why I've recently decided to get out it. If any of you guys want to get started in HF I can set you up with the whole rig, antenna and everything for low $$ or a rifle or something.

  8. I've got about 400-500 rounds through mine and it's never done that. You should give S&W customer service a call. 1-800-331-0852 (Inside USA) 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (Monday - Friday). They'll probably tell you to send it back.

  9. I've had 4 Witness pistols. A steel Wonder finish 45acp, a steel blued 45acp, a full size polymer Wonder finish 9mm and my current favorite gun, a full size steel blued 9mm.

Needless to say I like them a lot. They are well made but what makes them favorites of mine is the handling and natural pointing characteristics. I have also had 2 CZ75's and the Witness pistols are better (imho). Over the years Tanfoglio has made several improvements to the original CZ design that make it easier to take apart and also handle better.

As for EAA, not so good. I have never had any real problems dealing with them (ordering mags or floorplates, etc.) but from some of the stories I have read on the net I must be lucky. It has been said for years that if a decent distributor ever got the Tanfoglio handgun import franchise they would really take off in this country. Notice the transformation of the unheard of HS2000 into the XD phenomenon.

But I do love those Witness pistols!

  10. Every time I part with one I wind up regretting it as I have a hard time finding a full size 9mm that shoots as well or reliably and still fits the hand so well. That being said, I hope I can hang on to this one and I have learned my lesson if it shoots like the CZ's.

I have the same problem with the Witness pistols. I prefer them even to the CZ's. All of the CZ75 style pistols are very comfortable to shoot. I think the Armalite is a cousin of the Witness pistols with some of it's parts being made by Tanfoglio. The internal design seems to be more Witness than CZ75 which imho is better.

  11. I looked at mine and found one punch mark at the rear site.

One is good but I've never seen one back near the rear sight. They were always between the ejection port and the front sight.

It's not where the rear sight is staked in place is it?

  12. CZ52's are great!

I've had 3 of them. All were excellent shooters.

Interesting hearsay/facts about these: Supposedly when the Czechs ran them through the arsenal rebuild process they tested them for accuracy and marked them accordingly. If you look closely at the sight rib on top of the slide just about in the middle you'll see one, two or three small punch marks. Word is that a single punch was the most accurate with three punch marks being least accurate.

I always made sure the ones I bought had a single punch and they all shot great so I don't know if there is anything to that or not.

Also, if you're into tinkering with your firearms you can disassemble the slide and replace the spring under the firing pin block and drastically improve the trigger feel. That spring is waaay more powerful than it needs to be.

Lastly, disassemble the magazines and grind about an 1/8th inch off the bottom of the rear tab of the follower. This will allow the follower to go further down and the mags will hold nine rounds instead of eight. I modded 8 or 10 mags this way and never had a malfunction.

    Enjoy!
