I do a lot of hiking and back country camping and now my boys are starting to be old enough to go with me and I'm I'm thinking of carrying for SD where legal. I never know what or who I might run into in the woods. Right now, my choices to carry would be a 9mm Glock or a .45 xds. For animal attack, would I go with the .45 and fewer rounds, or the 9mm with plenty of rounds to hit a charging or attacking animal. I've come across both bears and boar but never been attacked and frankly think it would be unlikely, but then these are my kids, and if it happens, I want to be ready. I'm a good shot, but then I haven't had to shoot a moving animal while under stress before so I wonder if more rounds would be better.

Hi Folks,
When I was a kid, I had an air rifle and my grandpa's bolt action 22. I don't even remember what it was other than it was very old and had a threaded barrel. From about age 10 to 18 I lived with those two guns. I could shoot bees off clover blossoms with that old Crossman. I went off for school, became an adult and didn't much think about guns. Since getting married and having a couple of kids I had started thinking about getting a pistol for home defense and thanks to a nice tax refund, I pulled the trigger and got a Glock 19 Gen 4 about 2 months ago. I had never fired a handgun before and so I took it to the store's range and the store manager gave me a quick lesson on stance, grip etc. BOOM. I had found a new hobby. I can't believe how much I have enjoyed shooting and I don't know why I'm surprised since it was such a part of my life growing up. I've never been anti-gun, so I don't know why it never occurred to me that I would enjoy it. So I went a little crazy and started collecting (Ruger SR22, Ruger 10/22, MP15/22 and an XDS .45 so far), took a handgun training course and then the carry permit class and am having the time of my life. Started teaching my oldest son how to shoot the 22s. Like any hobby though, I'm always thinking about what to get next. Probably a .40. Maybe an MP shield, though I haven't found one to look at yet. Suffering through the ammo shortage like everyone else or I would be at the range every day. Looking forward to reading the forums here.

Those are all good answers, thanks. I was asking between the two guns I own, but who of us is not also thinking about what our 'next' gun will be. I hadn't considered 10mm but now I may look into that.
