  1. I remember hearing it on the radio, didn’t have cable at the time. I’ll never forget that day. I surely hope something like that never happens again.
Prayers to all those that lost someone that day, and those that have lost loved ones since that day.

I’ve got a council hatchet I keep in the truck and loan out as needed but the small forest axe from gransfors (or any of their products) is what you seek. I’ll never sell mine.

if you are on a budget the husqvarna and stihl offerings are decent too along with the aforementioned council.

Few coats of boiled linseed oil on the handles and you are good to go. One coat every day for a week. One coat every week for a month and one coat every month for a year.

Yep, I believe the Gransfors is the way I’m leaning. Just bought a new lawn mower, so that took priority. 😕

How exactly are we in a "lock down"? Every business I could possibly want to visit is open. Last week I went to a UT basketball game(with a mask). Bars are open. Restaurants are open. Hell, even the terrible night clubs we have in Knoxville are open. I was able to fly to Mexico in November. We aren't on anything even close to a "lock down".  The only thing they are even asking of us at this point is to wear a mask, and not make out with strangers. They are even sending us checks in the mail!

You’re right, shouldn’t have said lockdown because we’re not in a lockdown. Should have said week 49 of flattening the curve. And we’ve still yet to flatten the curve.

You are highly overestimating some of us.

Nah, I’ve met several members in person. I think we’re all pretty nice folks that have an above average intelligence level (If for no other reason, because we choose to be active on this board. Let’s face it we all learn A LOT of stuff just by reading).

The folks that are really dragging us down are the real deadbeats of our society. The ones that aren’t motivated to do anything because they’re just waiting on their gubmint check.

  5. 7 minutes ago, Omega said:I am still waiting for the HAZMAT collection points for all these CCP virus contaminated masks many are forced to use.

This times a million! When they came out and said that you could wear a reusable mask as long as you washed it regularly, along with the initial reports of making sure you used proper hygiene (i.e. washing hands, not touching your face, etc) that was kinda the line for me.

I’ve said it before, probably in this thread, if you’re at risk stay home. If you’re going to be around someone at risk, take the precautions necessary. Otherwise, go about your life and practice good hygiene.

What are we in, week 49 of the 3 week lock down? Absurd.

The real trouble is that we’re being governed to the lowest level of common sense among us. Fortunately most of us on here are above that curve, but the rest that surround us in society that are below that curve around really dragging the rest of us down with them.

I don't have the patience to read this whole thread but I feel confident people are being scared by hyperbole and misinformation.  I can understand why we don't trust the government on the surface as its failed us too many times but I don't think we should apply that skepticism to the point of folly.

We you say "we don't know the long term ramification of this vaccine" you haven't researched it very much.  This is not new technology, its acutally over 30 years old.  They've been researching this vaccine mechanism for a very long time.  "So why haven't we had this type of vaccine before now?", because thankfully we haven't had a widespread pandemic significant enought to warrant the human trials.  Ebola, Zika, West Nile are all candidates but infections were not enough to be able to study the results (thank God, aint nobody want Ebola).

The biggest concern with the vaccine is allergic response.  Yes you will feel bad the day after, especially the second shot, but no you did not actually get COVID-19 from the shot.  Its just your bodies immune system creating the defenses it needs to make you resistant in the future.

The vaccine made it to production so quickly thanks to the 30+years of research before hand, without that it would likely not have happened.  I can put my tinfoil hat on a empathize with those that are skeptical about the viruses origin and certainly how the government has leveraged us for its own gain to the determent of thousands of small businesses and personal finances across the country.  But none of that leads me to a point where I don't want a vaccine.  Obviously because I took one and get my second shot next Thursday and anxiously wait the opportunity to be "immuno-prepared" (i know that's not a word) for getting back to normal.

Meh, you go get your vaccine... I’ll roll the dice the other way. 30 years of prior research or not, they rolled out a concoction that’s untested in the long run. The delivery mechanism might work, but when reports have come out and said that just because you get the vaccine doesn’t mean you won’t get sick, and doesn’t mean that you won’t transmit the virus to others, it sounds like it’s not effective in all cases. I’ll wait until there’s more research and potentially something better than 80 - 90% effective.

I know someone who got it twice. Mild case in March. It killed him the second time.

This is what freaks me out. I don’t want to catch it the first time, but to be honest I DON’T want my kids to catch it.

No one knows what the long term ramifications of it are and yet we’ve got a vaccine that’s barely been studied to boot.

I may be on the edge of being a conspiracy theorist, but dang folks! In the grand scheme of things we know VERY LITTLE about this virus! How is it that anyone is comfortable putting a vaccine in their body to combat it is beyond me. But, you guys do you. I’ll do me. Just think about what you’re doing to yourselves. We don’t live forever and we owe it to those around us to live the longest, BEST lives that we can.

Here are mine, the one with the burnt hanble my son made for me. The head was found at a yard sale, my son put in the 36" handle. The other ax is 34" and was a yard sale find as well, the splitting maul has a pipe handle we did to add weight, works well and is a great work out. The little hatchet is a custom job I picked up off the net.

    axs.jpg

    I like that burnt handle!

  9. Reading about these Gransfors, but stumbled onto Brant & Cochran also. They look like they both make really good pieces.

I’d be really interested in picking one up from someone on the forum that makes them, as long as the materials are quality.

I’ve got a splitting axe, I’d like something I could take backcountry camping. So something light weight (3 - 4 lbs), with a handle between 24” and 28” inches.

  10. I’ve got a Fiskers machete that I use for my neighbors bamboo that creeps onto my property. Love it, and it’s almost always super sharp. Handles really well too.

Definitely looking for something that will be an heirloom one day, but I want it to be usable too.

  11. I’m looking for recommendations for a place to get an axe. I have one that I picked up for Home Depot with a fiberglass handle, but I’m looking for a company who makes axes, hatchets, etc with quality metal and of course a wooden handle.

The idea is that I’d like it to last the rest of my life time and have it to pass down to my son.

And of course, I’d like to see pictures of all of your axes, hatchets, tomahawks, etc!

Haha, so you are equating learning how to read and right to gun training?  So what minimum level of classes would you propose we have before being able to post on the internet?  I can speak Spanish too, so do I get to post on multilingual sites too?

I agree, people do stupid things, and I've always argued that we need to get rid warning labels to let nature take it's course,  not add more labels or laws.

Sure, it’s all basic learning. If you speak Spanish, by all means go post on a multilingual site. My Spanish is broken, so I’ll stick to sites that I can interpret.

And I’m all about getting rid of warning labels and letting nature take its course. 😉

  13. 4 minutes ago, Omega said:imagine needing training and licencing to exercise your 1st amendment right, people would go nuts, and arguably, you can harm more people exercising that right.

I was hoping someone would bring up another God given right that we should all be fighting to defend. That same God given right that we’re taught from Kindergarten all the way through high school (at a minimum). And some people, who want additional training in language pay, on their own dime, a college or university to gain further knowledge on the subject. See how that works, folks?

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think the gubment does a good job at much of anything, but at the end of the day they have to govern to the lowest level of ignorance. Hence the reason why there are so many gun laws that are on the books. Too many people have done too many ignorant things to put those laws there.

Thanks for those thoughts, Tedro2022.   I think that the required training for anything gun-related should be paid for by the state.  Yeah, meaning everybody, I guess, but that would eliminate the griping about the cost and , in these crazy days, it would  also eliminate all the noise about fees of that type being discriminatory.

How are the fees discriminatory, again?

  15. I’ll argue it from a bit of a different perspective, as I had a uniquely different experience.

As I was taking the in person shooting portion of my test when I was getting my carry permit (many, many years ago), I had an old geezer next to me that couldn’t keep his muzzle pointed down range and kept sweeping me with it. After repeated counselings from our instructors, one of them told me: “if he muzzles you again, drop him.” Needless to say, it didn’t get to that point. I found out later that day, he hadn’t passed the written portion of his exam either.

I tell that story because if grandpa wanted to get his permit today, what days he doesn’t have son/daughter/grandson/granddaughter take the test for him online and then start packing his gun with him where ever he goes? How many people does he put in danger? Are you all really comfortable with it being that easy?

Hell yes people should have to get basic training, no matter their proficiency level. Hell yes people should get trained on what their state laws are. Hell yes people should have to get in person training!!!

You can argue that people shouldn’t have to pay for it if you want, but if it’s something that is just handed out I don’t think people will take it seriously. There are plenty of instructors in the state and I’m sure if someone were financially incapable of paying their fees a simple phone call or email explaining their situation would elicit a positive response with some help to get them to where they want to go.

Maybe an unpopular opinion, but folks need to prioritize things in their lives a little more. If your safety is a big enough priority for you, find a way to make yourself and your family safe.

And whatever you want to argue, NO ONE has EVER had too much training. Knowledge is something we should all strive to get more of every day.

Great truck.......we got to do somthin about that front plate though...roll tide!!! Lol!!

There’s nothing wrong with that plate, I back the Hogs too.

My daily carry consists of a Glock 23 and a Kershaw Ken Onion design (I forget which model). There’s also an ifak in my backpack and more med in the trunk of my car, next to the AR bag, plate carrier, and 72 hour bag.

Just never know what’s gonna happen. I’ve heard several guys, who are WAY more experienced than me, say “you’re more likely to need to treat someone medically than you are to get in a gun fight.” I’d implore all of us to get more medical training. The greatest gift we can give someone else is their life back.

    What Biden’s gun plan says

Under Biden’s gun policy, Americans who own assault weapons or high-capacity magazines would have two options: sell them to the federal government through a voluntary buyback program or register them under the National Firearms Act.

    Lost em all... Sorry!

  18. I’ll be cleaning my trunk gun and my carry piece tonight, and double checking my load out. I work up around the airport, so just in case something happens I’d like to have all my gear squared away. I’m sure anything that would happen (Nashville area) will be downtown, but better safe than sorry.
i don’t think anything will happen tomorrow, but in the next month I could see something going awry, especially if the party of “tolerance and decency” doesn’t get their way.

To be honest, if you're an occasional hunter, occasional shooter & feel like one day you might like to maybe fool around at diddling some longer range gongs, the 6.5 creedmore (manbun) is the perfect choice. Factory ammo is cheap, plentiful & all of it is astonishingly good. Lots of bullet weights are available. It's low recoil, lots of rifle/component availability, inherently accurate. I mean, there's really nothing to not love about it (i still don't though......)

I’ve pushed my .308 out to 600 yds before and that was a lot of fun. Need to put a different base and rings on it if I’m ever going to get it to go much further, I was having to hold over about 6 ft. Above my target because I ran out of elevation adjustment. But that’s a whole other story!

You don't have a lever gun....

You don't have a .30-06 & quite frankly, not having either is just damned un-American! Wha's wrong witchoo boy?!

    🤣🤣🤣

But for srslys... something in a 6.5 would fill the gap between your .308 & WM quite nicely. As much as I detest the 6.5 manbun, it's the logical choice. Personally i'd do either a 6.5swede on a modern action, or a 6.5 PRC if you're feeling froggy.

    Good thing you’re handsome, Rob!

Kidding, but thanks for the confirmation of 6.5, I’m reading more and more on the different variations and trying to decide which one I’d make the best use of.

And for the record, I can’t grow a manbun (cause it’s starting to thin out up there, and I hate hair, period) but I wouldn’t grow one even if I could!

I’ll also agree that a lever gun is on the list, right now I just have itch for something else. And 30-06 is on the list too, just not right at the top of it.

The new 6mm ARC is getting some good press right now.

I’m going to do some reading about this tonight. I hadn’t seen anything about it yet, thank you for suggesting!

Based on the small amount of reading I've done, if I didn't have a .308 and wanted to shoot 300+ routinely, I would consider it, especially since this is no longer considered a boutique round.

You don't mention a 9mm, with an AR style, you can build or buy and fully customize.

I didn’t mention 9mm because I’m not that fond of it (hiding behind my keyboard). I shoot .40 cal in my pistols and am not looking to add any additional pistols cartridges to the collection right now.
I have a Remington .700 Police model that’s chambered in .308, and I like it A LOT. Just really brutal on my shoulder after about 50 rounds.

I’ve got one 6.5CM bolt gun (Bergara B-14 HMR) and I adore it. I’ve shot a 6.5CM AR before and it was really nice as well. The cartridge performs in either platform so I think that’s a matter of personal preference. If you have the builder’s itch, go AR. If you decide on a bolt gun, take a look at the Bergara, it’s a magnificent rifle and I think you’ll love it every bit as much as me and all my friends that have them.

I’ll look into the Bergara, thanks for the insight. I don’t have a preference on either AR or bolt, but now that I type that out I may prefer a bolt gun.
