  1. Man, your classes are always when I am out of town. The wild game class would be great info, and I have been trying to make it to the edible plants for a while now. It is great that you do this and I cant wait until I fet to attend one.

  2. Gonna stop by there in the morning regardless.  Did you notice any cool old guns?

Not sure what it was but it looked like an old flint lock. Someone was looking at it and I think he said it was $350 and the guy said it was a good deal. There were some glocks, sigs, and 2 revolvers. The ruger americans he had were priced very nicely. I would have bought A LOT more but time and money ran out.

  3. Hate to see Guardian go, not that I've ever bought anything there, but they had tolerable prices for a Knoxville gunstore.
Of course you know if they go totally out of business and surrender their FFL those 4473's are going right to West Virginia, lol. default_tinfoil.gif

He is keeping the FFL and doing home based buisness.

  4. I headed over there to pick up a gun, I thought with the liquidation they would still price match. Nope, they are priced as marked, 5% off is the best they will do. The gun I wanted even after the "discount" was still higher then everyone else. I then headed over to Gaurdian Armory to find out they are going out of buisness as well. What is going on! Well I picked up 2 guns and 2 lowers some mags and a rifle bag really cheap. I stupidly left my ID there and went back to get it and bought a bunch of ammo some of it was so insanely low I could not pass up. I dropped more money than I wanted but the prices were WAY to good. He said it all has to go and he will go low to make to happen.

  5. I should charge them a "don't whip your ass fee" as they are sneaking around my property to read the meter. We had wireless meters installed to keep them off my property but the meter reader can't seem to understand he doesn't need to walk all over my property any more. Not saying he is up to no good but I still can't come up with a good reason for him to be walking around my property, especially since my meters are already being read wirelessly.
I recently built a garage and went through hell getting the electricity installed. Wanted underground utilities, was told by KUB no. After I was finished with building the garage the same exact guy who said no before asked why I didn't get underground utilities. I got pissed and told him I wanted underground utilities but he said "no" before. Because I was pissed he offered to install underground utilities for free but I had to put a service pole right in the middle of our driveway, I laughed and told him "NO".
You have to pay for your inspection before they will approve a meter. After the electrical was installed the state electrical inspector said I needed at least four special little stand off brackets for the conduit coming down the service pole to my garage. I have never seen another residential pole with these despite the inspector saying it has been the law for a very, very long time. The electrician had never heard of them being used in a residential application but the state inspector said I MUST have them or he will never approve me for a meter. When I asked where to get them he handed me a sheet with installation instructions as well as where I MUST buy them. There is only one business in town that sells the inspector approved brackets and that business is the only business with brackets approved for use. And because they are required those $10 brackets actually cost me over $70 each.
As far as solar goes TVA and KUB have an agreement unlike anywhere else in the United States. Everywhere else in the United States you use YOUR power first then it pulls power from the grid. In TVA controlled areas you pay for the solar energy YOU generate because the energy YOU generate is dumped onto the grid ahead of your meter. You pay the same rate for YOUR solar as you do for electricity from KUB/TVA. KUB puts a meter on your solar equipment to measure how much energy you produce for the grid. Then they will reimburse you for the power you put on the grid but ONLY if funding is available. BTW, funding has not been available since the program's inception because some local companies put up some huge solar farms to reduce their electricity bills. By doing that those companies have taken all the funding away from residential customers who, like me, could use solar to offset their bill. 6-8 years ago I looked into installing a solar system and did not because the funding wasn't available then, just like recently. When I tried again last year and it was still the same way.
The ONLY way YOU can benefit from the energy produced by YOUR solar setup is if you go 100% off grid. You are not allowed to do a grid tie system where YOUR energy is used first in KUB controlled areas. You will not see a single dime worth of benefit from the solar YOU paid to have installed if you are still connected to the grid in any way. That is why no one wants to go solar in the area or at least that is why I would not install solar. It would cost me ~$45,000 to install a large enough system to put my bill at zero but because I will not get reimbursed there is no way I can recoup my installation costs. And when I told them I would not shell out $45K to install solar that would not benefit me they said "what about the environment?". So they are also trying to guilt people into paying them to install solar even though it will probably never benefit them. I would install solar immediately if they let me use my power first but you cannot, YOUR power goes into the grid first and you pay full price for YOUR solar. This is unlike anywhere else in the nation and the contract between KUB and TVA to do this still has close to 20 years before the contract expires. So even if the contract did change I would not have enough of my life left to break even because it will take 20+ years to break even according to their estimates. I even asked what would happen if I decided to use my solar first and was told I would get into serious trouble if I did. Not sure what sort of trouble, criminal or civil, but saving the environment is now no more important to me than it is to KUB.
Imagine the benefit if KUB offered to install a single solar panel on a residential roof for free and allowed customers to use a portion of that energy first. That would help out KUB because it would free up some energy production capabilities. Not only that but it would also generate, over the lifetime of the panel, profits well above the initial cost of installation. A solar panel lasts about 30 years and would not cost more than $1,000 to buy and install. I bet it would break even within a year or two then it would be 100% profit after that. Seems like a no brainer for KUB but they will never do it.
If they let me use MY solar first I would install a HUGE solar system tomorrow but because they have no idea if funding will be available year to year I would be stupid to throw away all that money for the benefit of KUB. Seriously, why can't they do like every other state in the country. Profits are the reason why, if people start using the power they, themselves, generate KUB could not charge people for it. They act like all energy being produced belongs to them even though the equipment used does not. It really is sad that they have an opportunity to help out people in the community but are more worried about profits than their customers or the environment.

Can you have a second electrical panel installed to run certian things on solar. We changed all lighting to Led and buy as energy efficient as we can every time. We did an energy audit and we found that outside of fridge and AC we use very little energy. We could have a system put in that would break even in 5 years. Would they even know if you did that? That way even in a power outage you would have general power.

  6. I remember you posting about it a few years ago. I walked in there ONCE and left immediately because it wasn't a place I would do business with.

Glad they are gone, thieves cost us all and there just seems to be way too many thieves in the world today.

Several retailers have been working to shut these guys down since then. KCSO did not have an active retail crime unit then, like they do now. Things kicked into overdrive when my wifes company got a new LP manager who hates theves as much as I do. He decided he was not going to stop until they were in jail, looks like he got them.

  7. Gotcha.

Scum like this will never get what they deserve and it's a damn shame.  Hopefully, the ATF will have something on them cause the Feds don't mess around.

The owners were stealing from the retail stores and selling the stuff on ebay and in the shop. They were also having people steal for them, by telling them where and what to steal. This was not like other pawn shops that have stolen stuff, the owners were intentionally selling stolen items. I know that all pawn shops have stolen goods but most shops dont have there staff out stealing for the shop.

  8. These guys took money directly from my family and I hope they rot in jail for a long time. I know they have stolen in excess of 100k in merchandise just from 1 location. It cost my family hard earned bonuses because the shrink was so high at the store. They even threatened employees when they were confronted for shoplifting. There has been a case building against them for over a year now and I am glad they have been stopped.

  9. I must be about 20 years older than you guys.  I came from a small (pop 727) Arkansas town that closed school the first week of deer season each year.  Teachers and students were all in the woods at deer camp, including the Principal.  I'm an Old Man that came from a different time in America...and I want to go back.

We closed for the first week of bow and firearm season. It was great.

  10. You were not much behind me then. Things at my school really started to change the year after I graduated. My girlfriend was still a senior and I would go pick her up. They put up all kinds of new fences with barbed wire tops and started to get majorly an@l about stuff.

My school did the same, barely reconizable two years later when my sister started. It was sad to see it change so fast. I did not like my classmates but I liked the well rounded education I got.

  11. We had Hunter Education in my middle school. Everyone was required to shoot a shotgun. I bet they don't do that now. I wish they did. kids would be safer about guns.
I heard that the shop class guys did gun work when no one was looking too.

I was in high school in mid to late 90s and we did gun work in shop class. I was also told the home education class bassically processed ducks that were shot over the weekend. We had a very hunter friendly school.

  12. In 1972, as a member of the FFA (Future Farmers of America) and a Senior in Conway High School, in Conway Arkansas my brother was awarded the American Farmer Award.  The banquet and awards ceremony was held in the school cafeteria.  He was presented with a Model 94 Winchester 30-30 with a color case hardened receiver and saddle ring.  I'm betting you won't see that today.

I was in FFA as well. After winning state in public speaking I was awarded a 10/22. That was a big deal and the school I went to had a fit and almost closed down the chapter. Just to rub there noses in it my leader bought me 1k rounds for it because a watering system I designed finally got its patent. The principal tried to make me return both gifts but word got out the farmers (including my family) put him in place.

  13. I have owned many fast classic cars in my life. My favorite was my 67 chevy p/u. I went through and got every Hp out of a 350 i could and that thing was faster than most of the cars brought to the strip I raced at. I knew my limitations but did not loose many races.

I havent had a fun car since the kids, that is about to change! I am tired of driving a minivan. Wife finnaly agreed to me building an everyday International Scout. She has no idea what she just agreed to. I will be picking up the LS1 engine and trans this week and will be looking at a couple of Scouts next week. It is going to be a lot of work just on the drive train. I will be slapping a cheap paint job on it just to not offend the HOA more than I need to. I am hoping by summer it will be on the road!

  14. Does anyone know of any place in the Knoxville area that sells uppers. I wanted to pick up a couple for some lonely lowers. I dont mind ordering just would like to see if I can help out some locals. I am looking at getting a 18+ inch barrel. I have only seen a couple of uppers locally and the seem to just be way overpriced PSA uppers. If you know of any shops with reasonably priced uppers let me know, thanks in advance.

  15. I run into them occasionally, usually academy or Gander. I have and old revolver that only shoots shorts and the family likes shooting it so I try and keep near 200 on hand. The plus side is they are not inflated prices when I see them and don't usually have the limit on them.

  16. I think the best anti theft device is a manual transmission. I have had almost everyone get in my car and asked me where I learned to drive "that". I bet you could leave the keys in it running and a theif would not make it out of your driveway.

  17. There are folks asking for help with horses as well.  Many were let loose to fend for themselves and some injured.  Horse stuff is in need as well.

Petsmart will take ANY pet related donations. Just bring it into your local Petsmart and they will get it where it is needed.

  18. Petsmarts all over the area are taking pet related donations. They are already connected to most rescues and shelters so you know it will reach the pets in a timely manner. I was told the biggest need right now is cat litter. This might be the best was to help displaced pets rather then calling around to find out who needs what. Petsmart will make the propper deliveries to the right places based on need. It would be a shame to drop 50lbs of dog food of to a place that has plenty and the shelter down the road has none.

  19. What concerns me more is the level of panic that a week old news story was able to cause with people.  I think I really need to reconsider the seriousness of what would happen during an actual SHTF scenario.

This is what I have been trying to explain to my mom and sister. They just got a small look into what a public panic can do. My mom always let her gas light come on. I have told her many times to never let it get below 1/4 tank. She sat at a station this morning all upset because they only had premium and she did not have enough to go elsewhere because the light came on during the drive there.
