1. "Second, this facility only smelts primary lead or lead ore. This is lead ore that has just been brought out of the earth."

From what I have gathered, the facility only smelts, not makes, bullets.

Been a lot of activity on the web about this topic.

The EPA is turning out to be a PITA and so the facility is shutting down. We all know who to thank for that one.

The plan now is to ship the ore to China ( Eek! ) for smelting and then for it to be shipped back into the US for use. I am wondering if that will drive up bullet costs substantially or because of cheap Chinese labor, keep costs about the same. Who knows as of yet.
2. I would say that anything coming out of a 45 could be commented upon as a slow moving, flying cinderblock.

That isn`t one round I want to get hit with.

But then come to mention it, I don`t want to get hit with anything. I just don`t want to get hit with a 45 the most.

3. The PBA "ammo" is very light indeed and will go supersonic with the smaller calibers.

Only getting about 650 FPS here with a 25 grain .25 caliber pellet. I get around 30 Ft/Lbs of energy to whatever I hit. Rabbits and things smaller, don`t do well with that. Hate that for `em. :)

I think the .22LR delivered energy is 120 Ft/Lbs but I can`t shoot that in my backyard. It`s too noisy and the distance that it can go is MUCH further than my pellet rifle can achieve.

I have found that the air rifle that I am using, is as accurate as the .22 I had, out to 25 yards or so. Again, convenience is nice as are the happy neighbors as well.
4. A lot of truth here. I recently dug out my daughters little $30 walmart special. A little bit of fixing up from where it fell down from the pipes in the basement and it's surprisingly fun and, like you say, doesn't draw attention. I actually have a reasonable amount of 22lr but it's just a pain to get to shoot it. Thinking of upgrading to something a bit more adult sized and with a little more zip. I see they also have auto-loading air rifles but they are bit rich for my blood.

My rifle is a break barrel design and I have to put a pellet into it each time I want to shoot.
I think it has made me more attentive to hitting what I am aiming at with each pull of the trigger.
An auto loader might be fine for some folks but I think for what I have, it has made me work harder to achieve better accuracy because it is more work to load and shoot. I do find myself spending more time between shots with it and working on technique.

My .22 was a different story.
Had a habit of squeezing off rounds quicker just because I knew I had another round waiting to go if I didn`t put the projectile where it was supposed to go the first time.
5. I do think that many people are going that route. My problem is that:

1. The good air rifles with decent power cost over $100 and I can't bring myself to pay as much for a 'bb gun' as a .22 rifle costs, or nearly as much.

* I can understand that. I paid $100 for my .22 rifle. My air rifle costs 3 times as much. The main thing I like is the convenience of backyard fun and the quest for decent groups. It has been a new challenge for me and one that I am intrigued with at this time. It doesn`t cost much to shoot either, which is a plus.

2. I shoot handguns more than rifles. If I shoot a rifle, more often than not it is a .22LR or .22WMR but I still shoot handguns more. Partly that is due to the ranges at which I can shoot in my back yard and partly it is to get trigger time that is relevant to carrying a handgun for SD. The air pistols I have seen that are comparable in size and feel to a carry type handgun are pretty weak and, to my mind, aren't all that comparable to shooting a 'real' gun. 22LR handguns, on the other hand - while still not exactly the same - are a much better approximation, IMO.

* Haven`t tried any air pistols other than a Daisy 45 copy many years ago. My mind is pretty made up on the pistol issue. Give me something with a louder report and some recoil and I am happy! LOL! Can`t shoot that in the backyard so a range trip is in order.

3. BANG! - even the .22 version of it - is simply a whole lot more entertaining, to me, than Pfffffttt. I get bored with air guns a whole lot more quickly than with gunpowder powered ones.

* Can understand the BANG entertainment factor. More realism added to the experience.

That is just me, though, and I am truly glad that some folks have found that they can get their small caliber fix from a pellet gun.

Lately I have spent more time in the backyard than anywhere. Looking back on all of the fun that I have had this summer, I think I have found a quick "fix" for feeding my shooting addiction.

Somedays though, ya` just gotta` go to a range and let that brass fly!

:)
6. Well, the 22 rifle and ammo is gone. That didn`t take long! LOL! Do I have any regrets, no. None. With the air rifle, I don`t have to worry about distance issues in the backyard if I miss the target and I have enough knockdown power to bend 1/8" steel from repeated hits. Neighbors don`t mind, the law hasn`t shown up, and I can plink off of my back porch. Life is good!

Off to take my proceeds from the sale and buy more pellets! For the caliber I am using, accuracy is good and is great for varmint control. It drops `em on the spot for the most part. If not, maybe they go 2 feet or so before DRT. I have a bad habit of hitting those suckers in the head...even when I aim for their mid section. Still trying to figure that one out......

More folks ought to try air guns out. Many would be impressed by the potential capability of what is out there. What is available nowadays isn`t a toy. My main air rifle weighs in at about 10 LB`s..... as much as an M1 Garand. I love the weight. An air rifle can have the capability in accuracy to impress even the most of the skeptics. Those here using them, already know this. They are probably even smiling reading my post. They know that accuracy can be quite good with air guns and they also know that "ammo" availability is plentiful even in political madness. Hmmmmmm....something to think about `eh?

Ask yourself this question. Why did you get into 22? I would hedge a bet to say that MOST people did it because it was cheap to shoot. Am I right?

Forget the 22 craze and hysteria. I`m over it.
7. I am going to sell my 22 rifle and all of my ammo. Haven`t seen 22LR around here in I don`t know how long that wasn`t overpriced, even when I could find it. I`m not going to get up early in the morning to stand in line behind those with inside connections at some of the big box stores. It isn`t worth it.

Bought a nice pellet rifle a few months back and have been enjoying a lot of backyard fun! :)Neighbors haven`t complained and the rifle is quiet. Have killed many a tin can with it. Have knocked down a few yard pests with it also. No longer need to drive to a range to have fun. "Ammo" is always available and I can shoot for much less than what 22LR ammo costs. Wish I had done this years ago.

8. OP,

your photo looks very familiar. Most times I hit a Walmart, I might see three or 4 calibers.

Gave up on .22LR awhile back.

Got into the airgun arena recently and love it! :)

Pellets are so much cheaper than .22 and other calibers.

Neighbors don`t say anything either when I practice in the backyard.

Not sure when ammo will be more readily available. I have a hunch it isn`t going to be anytime soon.
9. Where do they hide it? Went to day and all they had was 12, 20, & 410ga ammo.. And I asked, they said that's all they got in the case.. Please tell me there's a secret hiding place or the person is about as clueless as a box of rocks..

I have given up on trying to find ammo at Wally World lately.

Heard another story today from a friend who has a contact on the inside at Walmart. Confirmed my suspicions that one needs to be on a list to get the premium ammo when it is first put out.

I`ll sit tight until things calm down.
10. I have seen folks looking for things that are from out of state on some of the other boards. I knew David normally carried the certain items in question and was curious if it was possible to ship items to them. More profit for David and in the interest of boosting sales for him, I was curious as to whether he ships to out of state customers or not.

David is a good guy to deal with. I am trying to help him and his business out.

11. Was wandering around again in Walmart tonight. Went thru the sporting goods section and looked to see what ammo they had. Very slim pickings. The two guys who worked the counter there were standing next to the ammo case and I started talking to them after one of the guys said "Not much in there" and laughed for a second. Somehow the issue of tax stamps came up and I asked them if they had any trouble getting them as of late. One guy replied that they were out and had been on order for 2 weeks. I asked them if they had ammo in the back but just couldn`t bring it out because of no stamp. The guy replied "yes". We finished talking and I wished them well and went on my way. I`m going to watch this one. May go back in a few days and see if they have more ammo out for sale.
12.
hopefully it doesn't have a bad hook or slice...
I could have one but it would still have a slice!! My golf balls when launched, always seem to lock on to some distant planet in the far corner of the universe and disappear.
