I was looking at getting a well put in on my hunting property. Called the state to find out what the depths are in the area, they were less than 300'. Called a couple of well drilling companies and got quotes. Ended up going with city water from Sardis as it was 1/4 to 1/3 the price of the well.
May still get a well drilled, to use as a backup water source and to keep the pond filled.
One of the quotes was something like $1500 for the first 100' then $4 per foot after that. And every well company I spoke with wanted 220V service for the pump, and wouldn't discuss an off grid installation.

If I remember correctly, you need to establish residency in TN (30 days) before you can purchase a firearm. You can't just get your drivers license then head for the gun store. At least that's what I was told when I moved here 6 years ago. Someone correct me if I'm wrong... :shrug:
No residency time requirement that I'm aware of. Even the requirements for the HCP don't have a time limit.

He wasn't exaggerating on the difficulty level of the "tests". When I worked at a local range that did the HCP class there was maybe 2 or 3 people that failed either portion over the 4 year period that I worked there.
If you have experience shooting, you'll pass the shooting portion. I've seen people who never held a gun before in their life pass the shooting portion.
As others have said, usually hints are dropped during the class as to what will be on the test. -
Once I move down, would purchasing a new long gun be possible before I get a TN ID, or do I have to wait? I have an HK MR556 that has been put into "compliant" form for state law. Instead of spending money on gunsmithing to get the comp unpinned/welded and stock unpinned, I was contemplating just selling it up here and buying a new one down there. As a matter of fact I'm not sure I could even get the stock unpinned. The set screw on underside of HK stock has red loctite on it in addition to a blind roll pin.
When you move down here, take your DL and new proof of residency to the DMV and get your new DL. Go to the nearest gun store and buy your firearm of choice. You may be able to get it without the TN ID but since the DMV will hand you your license in the office (at least they did last time I was there) why wait.
With the proper documentation you could have you new ID before you start unpacking. -
I've heard of it before, and have seen it done, no biggie in my book.
Do I think there needs to be a law to "prevent" it? HELL NO! There are enough laws on the books as it is. So some politician driving a prius got his panties in a wad so what.
I remember a few years ago reading an article about how a politician wanted to ban trailer hitches on a truck unless the truck was actually pulling a trailer. Guess why, yup he walked into one in a parking lot (was prolly reading/texting on his phone when it happened).

I know when asking for advice you will get lots of "well this is what I would do" answers. Got one from a co-worker today. He said "I'd just put it all back together and leave it, put cheap used tires on it and repack the bearings every couple of years." That's all fine and dandy until it breaks down when you are in the middle of nowhere.
I wish some of you guys offering to help were closer or that this month was so danged busy (graduations, birthdays, vacations, etc.).
Since the axle is a piece of 1 3/4" square steel, I'm thinking I'll get 2 new spindles and hubs (with the same bolt pattern i have now) and get a local shop to put them on. Emailed one shop earlier and they came back with $75/hr shop rate, $50 min. Figure I clean up the part of the axle where the spindles are real good and all they have to do is cut, align & weld. I was planning on flipping the axle, but I'll wait. May end up gifting this one to my sister in Knoxville and getting a trailer better suited to what I need.
So, 2 spindles, 2 new hubs & shop fees and I'm done and will have a trailer that may just out last me.

Raildog - I thought about the make your own axle. I'm no where near comfortable enough with my welding skills to take that task on yet.
I did consider this axle, it would give the trailer about a 3-4" lift since the existing axle is a drop axle.

Requires the spring pads to be welded on, assuming a 120v welder can handle that task?

It would be cheaper and easier to buy new spindles and take it to a welding shop to have the welded on. Considering these hold the wheels on I would trust anyone but a professional welder to do it.

I have recently acquired a trailer that's been in my family for years. In all the time my dad was using it one of the spindles was bent, since it was used mainly on the family farm it was no big deal.
I would like to the axle repaired, tried a google search but just about everything that came up was for big rig trailers.
I also looked online and can't find a direct replacement axle, figures. My current axle has 46" between spring centers and 63" hub face. The closest I can find is a straight axle (no biggie there it would raise the trailer some) and 61" hub face. I think I would need to change out the wheels to a reduce/increase the offset to accommodate for the shorter overall axle.
So can anyone on the forum recommend someone/someplace to fix a utility trailer axle?

Have you ever used one of the camping ovens - just basically a folding, metal box with a rack or two that sits on top of the stoves? I have a camping stove that runs off of 'white gas' somewhere and one that runs off of the small propane bottles (I know exactly where that one is.) I am just wondering how well the ovens work and if they use more fuel to do the job than they are worth.

If so, yes, I used one, they are junk. Made biscuits in it, 1/2 were burned to a crisp the other half still raw. We put a square cast iron pan in the bottom to help with heat distribution, and it helped but still, they are not worth it in my opinion. Better to use a good dutch oven with charcoal brickettes or hot coals.

Bass Pro (and other retailers) sell "cold blueing" liquid. I've used it before and it works (heck I refinished a gun with it). It's not hot blued like a factor would do, but it would add the rust protection you need.

Well, I bought a Tundra 3 weeks ago, only because my Fix Or Repair Daily truck has a "known defect" in the engine block design and I needed a new block. No thanks. After fixing a problem with a transmission leak in December, that again is a 'known issue' (pass through connector seal on the tranny was leaking because ford used rubber o-rings).
Since I was just outside of the extended warranty it was out of my pocket to fix KNOWN problems with the design of the FORD. No thanks.
Our last ford (a windstar) also had problems with ford using rubber where they shouldn't. Had to take the top part of the engine off to replace 6 bolts that had rubber seals with new ones that were of another material.
When will ford learn not to use rubber seals when there is contact with petroleum products?
Because I'll get asked :) the problem on my truck was that the rear passenger side of the engine was not getting enough oil so the cam phaser when out cause a horrendous "ticking" sound, so bad that my gas engine sounded like a diesel at idle. Two shops both said that they could replace the passenger side parts, but the problem would return, don't know when, could replace both sides and the problem would return, or, replace the engine block with a "redesigned" one that solves the oil flow problem (and replace a slew of parts along the way). Google "Ford engine tick" for more information. If you have a 2006 - 2010ish F150 might be worth while to check it out before you have the problem.

some leakage may be ok, as long as the seal is good you should be fine. After opening I would wipe the rim of the jar just to remove any stuff that leaked out and was sealed there.
When canning is then canner full? If not the jars might be moving around too much and splashing the contents out. I've used jars filled with water to take up the excess space before.

First I've heard of that, but stranger things have happened. Could be just a local class fills up so fast that they issue the numbers for getting in. Doubt that getting a number is a requirement to taking the class and getting your permit.

no snow in Memphis, just ice. not that much but enough to cause major problems. I'm staying home with the kids since the day care is closed. Trying to convince the wife it's not worth it to go into work (we live near Bartlett, she works near the pyramid)

That happens every winter every time the word "snow" is in the forecast. I swear the meteorologists have stock in WM, Kroger and every other grocery chain for this reason.

I moved south from MN to get away from the snow. And quite frankly the little bit of snow we get here on the west side of the state is minimal at best. Even my wife who has lived in TN her whole life gets frustrated at all the closings/delays at the mention of a little bit of cold weather or freezing precipitation. Generally if we wait a day or two it's all gone with not a trace of it left.
Worst snow I remember was Halloween of '91. My first year in college and we got 38" of the white stuff, sure made for a fun drive back to the dorms after the halloween party :) not to mention being totally drunk and trying to walk in snow past your knees :)

John, what happens with the chicken & dumplings? Could be that the item is too thick (consitency wise) for canning. Just like you should only can squash in chucks not mashed. Even with pressure cooking you can't get the internal temp high enough to kill the pathogens.
I don't know how you make your C&D, but try leaving out the dumplings and canning it. Making the dumplings as you use them. Could be that the dumplings are too thick to get heated up enough.
We can tomatoes every year, but we go to the local farmers market and ask the vendors for the "canning tomatoes". We can get a box full (20+ pounds) for $5 - $8. Last year we came home with 6 boxes full out of that maybe 3/4 of a box worth of really bad tomatoes that we didn't use, and about a full box of tomatoes that we couldn't see any problems with.
I will make my own salsa and can it, love eating that in the winter :)

Didn't FL try this, passed the law but then the courts ruled it was an unconstitutional search? I'm sorry, but if you want your government hand out, you need to piss in the cup. Don't want to get drug tested, then don't take the money.
The real problem is that we have families that are 2 or 3 generations on welfare. No one in the family has ever had a job, just lived off the government tit. I say, in addition to drug tests, if you are not on disability, then limit the time you can draw welfare. Max of a couple of years, regardless of the number of kids you pop out. I have an aunt, that when she was younger told her family that she was going to have another kid just so she could stay on welfare longer. Since her first had just turned 16, she had another, then another just to keep from working. This same aunt would buy an item, like a curling iron, put her old one in the box and seal it back up then return it for a refund.
