  1. Thanks for the help. I just want all bases covered. I believe I would be covered seeing that the definition of "possession" by Merriam-Webster is: "control or occupancy of property without regard to ownership" therefore i, being an occupant, am in possession of the vehicle. And lawful just means it's not stolen or I am not prevented by law from being in possession of that vehicle. So I would be in lawful possession as would my friend

  2. Hey guys. I started a conversation previously regarding handgun laws and I got great answers that helped a lot. But I have one more question that I didn't think of but would've been helpful to know today. The castle doctrine extension enables me to carry a loaded handgun in my vehicle without an HCP as long as I am not unable to own a handgun by law and if I'm in lawful possession of the vehicle. My question is....if someone I am riding with (friend, relative etc.) is in lawful possession of their vehicle, would that be covered by the castle doctrine? Or is it only if I myself am in possession of the vehicle and am driving? Thanks for the help!

  3. Chances R I've noticed that lol. I've gotten way better advice on this thread then I have while talking to the actual government. Again I thank everyone for their help on this situation. If I ever have any future questions this is where I'll go to ask

  4. Thanks wing shooter that's what I was wanting to know. One more question for u guys.....if I'm deer hunting with my 30-06 and I also have my pistol on my hip is it considered hunting with a pistol or is it carrying because I already have a rifle? Or can I technically hunt with both at the same time? Not a big deal but I'm just wondering

  5. The sergeant told me it had to be 4 inches. But as I said before.....even the Tennessee Department of Homeland Security and Safety didn't know. I got different answers every time. So a different twra law enforcement officer could give me a different answer. How am I supposed to abide by the law if my government doesn't know what the law is or can't tell me

  6. Oh shoot do u know of anywhere that says it can be any barrel length so I could read it? All I see is it saying if I'm in "full compliance with the rules and regs" but that's what I'm trying to find out lol. What are the rules and regs. Basically all I need to know is if my 3.3 inch barrel would be legal for me to open carry while hunting. I've found numerous times that it's ok for me, being 19 years old, to open carry while hunting as long as I am using the appropriate caliber for that season.

  7. Thanks wing shooter. This is what I found using that URL:

Persons with a handgun carry permit pursuant to TCA 39-17-1351 may possess a handgun
the entire year while on the premises of any TWRA refuge, public hunting area or wildlife management area, including the North and South Cherokee. Nothing in this subsection shall authorize a person to use any handgun to hunt unless such person is in full compliance with all wildlife laws, rules and regulations.

For all other Federally managed properties such as refuges and military installations (example: Oak Ridge WMA) contact that speci c facility or location I still couldn't find whether it has to be 4 inches or if I can carry while hunting at my age without a HCP. Please let me know if I missed something

  8. A sergeant which the twra recommended I talk to just called back and told me that I had to have a 4 inch barrel for the gun to be labeled a "hunting weapon". Anything shorter is strictly self protection weapon in which case u have to have a HCP to carry. I will also add that I am legally hunting hogs. I am on a private lease and I am listed on the exemption to kill hogs legally 24/7 using any method I like besides dogs in our area

  9. Update: so basically I have called everyone under the sun trying to get a yes or no answer on this topic. I started with twra, then Tennessee department of safety, then the sheriffs office. And like some of u said....I got a different answer every time. A man at the dep. of homeland security said I can't have a handgun at all except at home which I know is incorrect. Also another lady from there said I can have a handgun in my truck loaded or unloaded as long as it's not on my person. I also got numerous yes and no answers on the hunting topic. Eventually I asked my papaw and he seems to think for a weapon to be used for hunting it has to have a 4 inch barrel. So that rules that out since my xd has a 3.3" barrel. Also a police officer told me that I can have a pistol in my truck if I'm 21 and I can legally target shoot. Also that I would have to contact twra about the hunting thing. So I'm getting the run-around and I'm being led in circles. It's pretty bad that my papaw knows more than the TENNESSEE GOVERNMENT does about handgun laws. So in conclusion....what can I do with a handgun?....I DONT KNOW. NOBODY KNOWS, ESPECIALLY THE GOVERNMENT

  10. I think I'll call twra and ask them what they would allow as far as carrying a centerfire handgun as a sidearm for hogs. And I'm pressing this issue because I have been hunting before and had a hog turn and run at me. Luckily a had a 12 gauge shotgun in my hands but I also often hunt squirrels with a .22. And if a 250-300lb hog is charging at me with the intent to gash open my legs then I don't really want to rely on tickling him to death with that .22. Now I know people are going to say "well I kill hogs all of the time with a .22 Lr." Yes I know they can be killed with a well timed and well placed shot. But I would rather have something that will stop the animal right there and then. Like I said I know hogs can be killed with a .22lr as I have done it myself once or twice. But a soldier doesn't go into war with a baseball bat simply because he knows it can potentially be deadly. All of that said....thanks again for the help everyone lol

  11. Basically what I have found regarding hunting is....nobody under the age of 18 can legally carry a pistol even while hunting. Also you can't carry a centerfire handgun during small game season except furbearers and crow but you can carry a rim fire handgun during all small game except migratory birds. Also I can carry a centerfire handgun during all big game seasons but no rimfire weapons. But I don't see anything on wild hogs. Obviously it's big game but isn't listed as an option. I will add that I do have a permit to legally kill hogs at any time of the year(even during no season). So basically this limits me to only carrying snake loads(shot shells) in my 45. I guess I could carry an extra mag of JHPs because FMJ is prohibited. But I hunt from a tree stand with a 30-06 from a tree stand so I won't need a pistol for hogs at this point. I was hoping I could carry my 45 during squirrel season with my 22 just in case one charged at me. But oh well I guess. Honestly some of these laws are stupid. It's apparent to me that the ones who wrote these laws don't have to read them. I found all of this from tn.gov

  12. Thanks everybody and I appreciate everyone trying to help me out Though I am very confused and am not sure what's right and what's wrong lol. Just a little background on me....I hunt on a private lease where there are many wild hogs that have been known to be aggressive. I'm not really worried about the fishing thing but I would like to carry my 45 while hunting in case a wild hog tries to tear my leg off. There are also a few bears but I'm more worried about the hogs. I think I'll just avoid carrying loaded in my truck as it seems to risky. Doesn't anyone know for certain what the laws are regarding me open carrying while hunting or scouting before hunting season? Again thanks for all of the replies because I read every one of them

  13. Wow that was fast. Thanks everybody for answering my questions. That's helps a lot. I think I'll also take TNman's advice and call the police department or Tennessee dep of home defense if I can reach them just to make sure. Again thanks for all of the replies and the help. Hahaha and I just realized that I said cow permit. I meant CCW permit

  14. I have a few simple questions that I can't find straight forward answers to anywhere. First of all, let me add that I am 19 years old and that I live in eastern Tennessee therefore all questions will be pertaining to my age and where I live. The overall question is....What am I able to legally do as far as carrying and transportation? I realize I can't legally conceal carry at all until I am 21 years old with a cow permit. But can I open carry if I am using the pistol for hunting? Also can I open carry while fishing? Also I heard of this "castle doctrine" that has taken affect in June of 2015 that allows anyone above the age of 18 to have a loaded or unloaded handgun in their vehicle. Sorry if that is a bit long or confusing. I just need clarification before I wind up in jail. Thanks for your time and I appreciate all answers that could help me out
