  1. I'm doing my research and due dilligance on a pending small SUV/AWD vehicle. Currently I'm looking seriously at the Subaru Forester and Ford Edge. With those selections you can pretty well determine the price range I'm leaning towards. The four-cylinder engine in the Subaru kind of concerns me but it does have pretty good HP.  I  generally look first at slightly used vehicles but have sometimes purchased year end models when the price was right. Do any of you have recommendations?

I shopped that same market and decided on a 2013 Ford Edge SEL AWD exactly three years ago. The reason I know it was exactly three years ago is that my factory warranty runs out in just a few days. Is it weird that I feel kinda cheated because I haven't had any warranty claims? I did intentionally avoid the "MyFord Touch" option because that seemed to be the reason behind most consumer satisfaction complaints I'd read. I haven't missed it.  I've been pretty impressed with the vehicle and have no complaints. It's a good vehicle and I'd buy it again.

  2. Q: How can I reduce the amount of mail I receive from the NRA?

A: Simply email us at membership@nrahq.org or dial 800-NRA-3888 and request to be placed on the "Do Not Promote" list. This will significantly reduce the amount of mail you receive without affecting important mailings, magazine service, or your membership renewal.

  3. Interesting. I'm guessing they work off the regular phone satellites. Looks like batteries are internal. Most phones and tablets are unable to power external devices.

Yeah, it appears that the TextAnywhere and Cerberus devices use Iridium.

They do have their own battery but apparently serve as a "repeater" and still rely on your existing phone for text messaging functions, addressing, etc. If so, you're going to at least lose that functionality when the phone dies. But I could be wrong, I don't have any experience with them.

  4. Anyone have one or looked into them? I've starting searching and was going to get views from people who have them.

I use a SPOT personal locator beacon (PLB) but it's only one way messaging (you to them) and doesn't provide for free form text messages. Another PLB option that does permit two way text messaging (but still no voice) is the DeLorme InReach.

Ran across a couple other text options that appear to work with an existing device. I'm not familiar with these but I'd guess that useful battery life would be limited by your phone/tablet.

  5. Walter State Community College used to offer a Handgun Carry Permit class through their community education department but I don't know if they still do. They did the academics on campus and then used the police range for live fire. You might give them a call if that location would be convenient for you.

As far as ranges to rent/shoot, I know of Sevier indoor Range in Sevierville, Tactical Advantage (Coal Creek Armory) in Knoxville, and Gunny's in Maryville. Although I don't understand it, it's apparently not politically feasible to open a gun range in Hamblen County.

  6. I picked up the Winchester 24 gun safe at TSC this weekend. I like it, very sturdy feeling and customizable interior. Took a while to get it inside and properly installed (just me and a buddy, be much easier with more people or moving dolly or furniture pads) but it looks great. I really like the electronic keypad vs messing with a combination. My only gripe is there is not a backup method (key) to open the safe but that is minor - keep some extra batteries around and change every couple of months.

You could just wait for the battery to go dead since it's accessible from the outside to change. That's my plan, anyway.

5 - If my battery goes dead, will I lose my combination?
No, you will not lose your combination. The combination is retained in the lock even after power is lost. Simply install a new battery and operate the lock in a normal manner. Make sure you only use a 9-volt ALKALINE ENERGIZER® or DURACELL® battery.

  7. Yes, it is.

But with a CDL if you blow over .4 in your PERSONAL car, you can be charged and lose your license.

Hmmm. I'm not so sure about that. As has been previously covered, you certainly can be charged without any bac measurement but I think that the ".04 private vehicle" thing is a widely believed urban legend. Anybody have a reference that says something different?

  8. No, thee times this year they sent me some kinf of firearm training DVDs.  I was going to just throw them away but I opened one and it said if I dont mail them back within 10 days they will keep sending me the series and bill me for them.  Myself I though that was a little shady.

Like I said I support them, but it would sure be nice if they had an opt-out for the marketing.
