I'm a fat guy - 5' 10" and 220 lbs. I used to carry IWB exclusively before I got myself a couple of high quality gun belts. I still carry concealed, except now it's OWB for me. Soooooo much more comfortable and I can conceal OWB just as well as I could IWB. In fact, I don't see the need to ever carry IWB again.

Cheers! *Raising his glass* My feelings the same!
  2. Do yourself a favor and stick with OWB. More comfortable, no need to get a different pant or belt size. Less humidity or perspiration near your firearm. OWB easier to adjust while sitting in a car seat or at a desk. With the right set up, you can conceal just as easy. Remember, if it is not comfortable you may not carry. If conceal-ability is so critical get your self a pocket pistol like a seecamp, LCP and a myriad of other 32 or .380 versions.
  3. I use a lot of stingray. The hard calcium beads are a little challenge to stitch through. May not be an issue if you are hand stitching. I have posted a couple tutorial posts on leatherworker.net which is a great learning resource for anyone interested in all manners or leather craft. Best site in the world for loads of very experienced master craftsman...and women!

Stingray was used on ancient Japanese sword handles. You cant wear it out. It is elegant and rugged at the same time. It comes in every imaginable color and even now in wild tiger, zebra, skulls, iridescent, giraffe patterns that will make your head spin. I have even done one in a spiderweb pattern! Not for everyone I know, but pretty special nonetheless.
  4. Boiling the leather is usually unnecessary to get the hardness you desire. By simply placing briefly in warm water allows the leather to soften veg tanned enough to do anything your want with it. Boiling leather can can ruin your project and your leather. Once molded it is best to oven dry at around 135 deg. This gets the hardness that you want. Dont over dry as it will shrink your work.
  5. Nice first try. They will get better with each try. This leather stuff can get quite addicting. Dyeing is an art in itself. I have learned that airbrushing dye creates the most uniform color. Your leather has a lot to do with that too. Hides tanned in Mexico do not have nearly the uniformity in finished product as a herman oak or a wickett & craig hide. Both tanned in the US.
Keep at it! Save your first one and compare to one made in 6 mos. You will be amazed at progress!
  6. I doubt she'll find anything particularly comfortable especially as she gets closer to due date. Frankly, purse carry is a good option and better than a shoulder rig. I would tell her to pocket carry in an overcoat since times are getting chilly. Some times you just have to make due until she delivers. Once she delivers a good leather OWB will be best IMO. Especially for women, leather molds best to a womans hip.
  7. Just an FYI on dyeing nylon. It will take dye, it will turn black....HOWEVER it will also wear off and most importantly the first time it gets wet it will run off on your shirt undergarments and pants. Try to always get the color nylon made with the dye impregnated into the actuall nylon from the factory.
  8. Hello friends! Many of you know me from other forums. Really can't answer why I have not posted sooner as I would rather post and share in my own back yard than anywhere. Nonetheless good to be here. Married with kids, gun owner, gun shooter, apocalypse ready enthusiast for many years.

I am a custom holster and belt maker. I am sure not the only one here. I mostly work in the exotics, elephant, alligator, stingray, shark, hippo, giraffe, ostrich. It is not my full time gig, real estate is. However, I spend almost every evening on my craft. I simply love it. I also do leather repair.

I used to coach small bore rifle team here in Nashville, NRA certified.

    Best to all,

    Rob
