Last Monday. My GFs 40ish niece and her 19 yo son are visiting from upstate New York. The niece hunts with a .243, but neither had ever fired a handgun. So I loaded up a bunch of guns and ammo and off to the range we went. :D

We shot .22s, .38s, .357s, 9mm and .a .45 1911. Both did surprisingly well for their first time. The niece is a bit of a Tom Boy and fell in love with my 4" S&W Model 19 firing full house 158 JHP Magnums. The son took a real shine to my old S&W Model 39-2  9mm. My GF got in some trigger time on her two .38s. and put a little over 100 rounds down range.

As for me, well I spent most of my time teaching and supervising the noobies. But I enjoyed it just as much as they did.

Haha.  I wish.  Shooting at 100.  But the 6.5 Swede project has been put on indefinite hold.

I finally bought a barrel for a long(er) range AR in 5.56.  24" stainless, what Midway calls a varmint profile, pretty heavy, 1 in 8" twist, target crown, 5R rifling.  They don't say who makes it.  Customer reviews (there are quite a few) talk about sub MOA with factory ammo.  I hope for good results with bullet of at least 70 gr.  If I can get accuracy out of 77 or 80, even better.

Also bought an adjustable gas block to go on it,  Many reviewers say they started with an adjustable, or soon switched to one.

Price of the barrel is rather unbelievably low for a good quality barrel, about $130.  Would never have considered it except for the large number of very positive reviews.

This will be a fairly conventional AR. with a fixed A2 stock plus cheekrest, palm-rest pistol grip, aluminum freefloat handguard, fairly inexpensive bipod.  I'll probably start with a Bushnell scope I picked up on a close-out.  Most of the parts I've had for quite a while, they were on another AR, an A2 with a carry handle.

I've got one of the midway barrels, the ar stoner brand.

Im very happy with mine, though I paid a lot more when I got it than you. It is an all around well built piece of gear.

There re was rumor mill word that these were being made by wilson and or green mountain if I recal right.

I dont really care who made it, they did a great job.

  4. That is very nice! They are a disease though, you're officially a potential carrier when you join TGO, looks like you have fully contracted the illness.

Now or you need a pistol, two carbines, and one of those fancy precision stocks from magpul for your 24".

Then, you can get started on second calibers and back up part rifles, because everyone knows the best way to store spare parts is complete as a rifle.

Don't forget spare parts for the spare part rifles.

And magazines. If you can lift the weight of all of your loaded magazines you're doing it wrong. Once you get more than you can reasonably carry you'll know you're off to a good start though.

  5. I'm not too well versed in either, but I would have to believe that these days there would be more factory ammo availability on the creedmore as well as current reloading data and maybe even brass.

Ive heard nothing but great things about the performance on the creedmore from owners, usually when you hear about the swede, it is great...for a milsurp round.

i would imagine with hand loads and a modern quality rifle either would fine.

  6. I spent my last $25 to wander around, drink a flat coke, and 'enjoy' the sights and smells of the gun show attendees and go home empty handed.

I still like like the radio song for the goodman shows, they still play that?

'Call a budddddddy, bring a frienddddddd.'

  7. My dad made a ribbon and medal layout for him using an app (yes, theres an app for that) I'll upload it to photo bucket tonight or tomorrow and post it here if you like.

  8. Looks like the paperwork shows the following missing from the case* :

    Vietnam Campaign Medal - RVN

    Korean Service Medal - US

United Nations Korea Medal - UN

Theres another medal he may be eligable for, the Koreans awarded them to allied soldiers, but the US didnt except them at the time but have since then.

*He would need to see the DD-214 to be sure, some of these require specific service in specific places between specific time frames.

  9. I just sent him a text with what you have there. If he can make heads or tails out of it I'll let you know and we can see about getting some other stuff looked at.

If he doesn't know I would be shocked if he didn't have a contact that did.
