I hope you were trying to be funny when you called Hanoi Jane sexy? I think she should still be over there listed as MIA.......JMHO
despite my digust of her communist ways.....in the movie Barbarella JF was pretty hot.

Compare her entertaining troops in Vietnam to another sexy actress of the time Hanoi Jane who posed on enemy anti-aircraft guns.
RIP Raquel

I'm starting to guess this has been going on for quite some time.
Now the cat's out of the bag with the huge obvious one being spotted by everyone (maybe on purpose?), the Govt. is doing something finally to save face politically.
The biggest threat these objects pose is exposing/testing the weakness of the US to stand up to China I suppose.

Pressure is the same in every direction. Doesn't matter where you make holes, it will leak at the same rate.
Normal air pressure at sea level is 14.7psi. The air pressure at 65,000ft is about 0.8psi and the temp is about -65F.
Flying a U2 "near it" likely meant within 10 miles. A collision between the U2 and balloon would yield a smoking hole in the ground. It flies at nearly 500mph and can't maneuver much at all at that altitude.
Figured helium is lighter than air so top holes would vent the gas faster despite pressure issues.
No doubt accurate shooting is difficult but seems the wealth and might of the US should be able to capture a near intact payload next time. There is large swaths of barely populated land that it flew over.
Holes must make it descend somewhat right? Some gas leaks out?
Next time perhaps attempt "over land" numerous large rounds towards the top. Just keep at it. If no luck after it's Swiss cheesed then we know the missile works lol.

Did you see the video of the F22 shooting it down? I'm not sure how anyone would classify that as inadequate. What better ballon buster do you want?
Cheers,
Whisper
One that can bring it down safely but slower to preserve the payload as previously discussed.
Multiple rounds apparently don't phase it and the missile is overkill.

I read in several places that those balloons operate at very low pressure. Plus the altitude and materials are a major factor. It don't just pop like a regular toy balloon. It was stated that you could shoot a hundred 20MM holes in it and the helium would still bleed off so slowly that it could take days for it to come down and you'd never be able to predict where.
I would guess if you could accurately shoot holes towards the top it would vent the helium faster than the middle.
I read somewhere we were flying old U2 planes near it. Seems we need to rig one up as a balloon buster if our fighters are inadequate. There has to be a good way to deal with these things next time.

Please forgive me if I sound as if I have my aluminum foil hat on. I’ve taken a balloon or two down in my lifetime and that’s all I can say about that. I am concerned about the residue cloud in the video as the balloon went down. Low tech, in-direct delivery systems are cheap, practical, and can be very effective. Floating gases burn clean- unless they have “additives”. It’s just a recurring thought as I rewatch the video over and over…
I too thought the residue cloud was weird then thought maybe....
Helium (possibly a tad warmer than ambient) under slight balloon pressure quickly released might cause a cloud effect? It dissipated quickly. What was the trail of shiny debris that followed above the balloon for quite some time after the missile hit?
I'm no expert but I do have a collection of well worn tinfoil hats and this botched anti balloon mission was either by design or just par for the course for for our leadership these days. Who knows?

Can you slow the guns down on an f22. 6000 rounds per minute. I'd be hard firing of 3 or 4.
Lord knows they had enough time to figure it out.
Multiple planes with few rounds loaded perhaps?

The way they shot it down, (large projectile over the ocean) did not allow for intact recoverable information.......By choice?
Surely a small round or two, or three while over unpopulated land much earlier in the game could have brought it down safely in my humble opinion. As usual I smell a rat.

It seems many youth look for reasons that they too can be a member of the oppressed victim of society club. This gives a young person a why bother to try attitude.
Teach them to avoid this line of thinking and the people that are destroying their motivation.

How do we capture a balloon at 60,000 feet?
Just a guess but high altitude plane like the old U2 with projectile to pierce it. Doubt shooting it would pop it.
Small hole. Slow leak, slow descent, follow and be ready.

Actually it should have shot down over the ocean as it approached the Alaskan coast.
Not knowing what might be in the balloon it might be wise to capture and analyse off the coast.

I don't understand it. What is this balloon showing them that they don't already see with satellites? I have a hard time believing it's harmless.
It might be a test to see how sleepy Joe reacts?

I agree but see NOTHING negative about her being said or questions being asked by meda! Why? is she untouchable?
Not sure it's justified till the facts are out but It seems lesser involved individuals are being suspended and perhaps charged....another cop from the initial stop I never heard about till yesterday, EMS and maybe more to come.
So why not Chief Davis? Ultimately she made decisions or ignored problems that allowed this kind of blatent abuse of power to go unchecked. There is no way in hell "the five" hadn't done this sort of thing before. The buck stops with her correct?

Policing is hard and these days thankless. Recruiting and retaining good people must be almost impossible thanks to the defund the police crowd, BLM and the rest. Cops know that no one has your back if an altercation unintentionally goes bad. The street criminals are emboldened knowing this. You could not pay me enough to stick my neck out being a cop these days in this political climate. Saying all that, what type of folks are now in uniform in some of these troubled cities?
The fact that FIVE uniformed officers happened upon this unlucky guy leads me to believe there are many more bad apples in this department. Five bad cops on the same stop just a coincedence? I'm a guy who errs on the side of cops or at least strives to see their point of view until evidence proves otherwise but...... These animals were abusive and intimidating from the start, no attempt to diffuse or calm. Later they had many multiple chances to easily overpower and cuff this guy, (Even if he was struggling a bit) with all 5 of them but instead chose to kick and beat him instead. As far as reaching for the cops gun? At that point I sure would have tried! I'm guessing the cop is lying about the gun anyway.
Final point. The Chief should resign and the Dept. investigated on hiring practices and every current officer given a second look.

How does it shoot? If it shoots alright I’d leave it be.
It's pretty bad. I inherited it and even after much cleaning the bore looks like a cruddy sewer pipe. Not up on headspace either so never shot it.
Action is real good so I don't want to make things worse.
Cleaning did reveal partial remnants that it was a two groove

90% rifle with corroded inner barrel, 1942 Canadian made Enfield, Would you?
(A) rebarrel? if so jungle carbine it up, modify etc. into what interesting project? Don't have the nerve to sock alot of money and time into it.
(B) rebarrel as original as possible? being rebarreled reduces value alot I would think. No Idea the process and expense but would be neat to have a fresh 303 Enfield
(C) keep it stock for historical reasons to look at and fondle lol....Would look nice in a WWII Museum
(D) Part it out? not sure that's a thing and time consuming.
Option C is not for me that's why I have it in the classifieds but am starting to consider A, B and D

Thoughts on the Red Wave "if it happens" market bounce/spike? Will it be as big a jump as people think? Will it be shortlived?
Bought a bunch of quality blue chip dividend type stocks at near 52 week low not so long ago and was suprised how good they are doing as of now.
I normally buy at dips, hold for a year or two and sell when it looks peaked out but..... getting where with all the crazyiness lately I might take the tax hit and sell all my positions before my usual year of holding if the jump is BIG.
My thoughts are a BIG rally if both houses go R, but big drop as soon as economic reality sets in. a few days maybe?
They say you can't time the market but sometimes you can!

Sad watching the video how potentially easy it would have been to take her out early if there was only an armed teacher/staff or two nearby in the entry or hall.
Do private Christian schools not have SROs?
